GSM Dart/Flamingo

Post by Watercool »

I have been surfing the net and ran across the GSM. From what I gather from there official websight it is designed and made in South Africa. I like the looks of the Dart, and would not mind getting my hands on one. How ofter does these come up for sale and what price do they fetch? Any barn finds?

Every now and then one pops up - bear in mind that only 2 or 3 hundred were made almost 50 years ago, and many were raced - so not too many remain.

Suggest you contact the GSM Club - their website is http://www.gsmclub.co.za/

There were a few made a few years ago - - called the Hayden Dart -I don't think they are available any longer. Bob van Niekerk still has the rights to their design and I think he stopped them making any more.

There is a Guy who lives in klerksdorp who currently builds a very original copy (licenced) of the dart I could try to get his info. His name is Jeff levy and the work is very good.

The last time I saw a dart was at a motor show and they were still being built. But I'm sure somebody on that website could help.

Just checked out the website. Peanuts Forche is a well known petrol head here in Cape Town. I'm sure you'll get all the help you need from him. He also stays in my vacinity but don't know exactly where.

Thanks for the info guys, but to import one is not that easy and involve tons of paper work, and you have to deal with the goverment and that is no fun.

Would they give you problems even if the car is in kit form?

It doesn't have a chassis number,so that shouldn't be a problem.

Watched a program on DSTV about a year ago on the history of this car with interviews of the men involved, Willie Meissner (SP?) and others.
If anyone can get their hands on this program I am willing to pay for a DVD of it. :D

They were made in Montague Gardens up until 3-5yrs ago around the corner from Adult World but alas went bang around 2005 or so....

They are a sweet ride my ex father in law had one when he was younger and said it had HUGE smile potential....

I know this thread has been very quiet but there's a guy here in Pinetown, KZN who runs a Dart replica workshop and he used to build Darts.

I also came across a 1964 Flamingo for sale recently which I think i'm going to get...
Life begins at 80 and ends shortly after in a temporary court on the side of the road.

They Dart in the picture looks like a replica. The originals did not have the moulded in bumpers as far as I recall.
