After spending the night at IMPI's place in Orkney, we woke this morning to find the cars parked outside covered in a layer of ice
Thanks once again for the hospitality!

Amazingly, Orkney is *touch wood* one of those places where kids can still ride their BMX's in the streets till after dark and you do indeed still find your cars the next morning where you left them, even on the lawn with no fence in the yard.

Watercool.... I do understand what you are saying, but ours is a cold that eats thru your clothes.

2000m altitude (nearly 7000ft), about 10% humidity and -10 celcius.
Problem is our houses are built for 30 plus deg summers, not winter.
Trust me on this.... minus 10 in Europe beats plus 10 in Cape Town any day.

Hell no!!! It eats thru & into your bones... I think the other problem in Jhb is that they get summer rain which increases the underground water table and then in winter when the temps drop to freezing this water table freezes and the cold comes out of the ground so you never warm up in winter.....

Sorry guys, I'm with WC on this one.

If you think we have it cold, you've not really been cold yet.
Even our frostbitten winters close to open water where you actually get to -5 Celsius, are short lived enough to survive with minimal effort.
That snow... That's death in a white robe.
He silently creeps up on you fills you with a fake warmth and sneaks you off to the next life.
By the time you realize it, both you and the paramedics are about 6 hours to late.

I've driven the buggy in snow in Lesotho with only a warm jacket and gloves, and it really wasn't that bad. I don't think we know real cold here in sunny SA...

When the wind is doing 60-70km/h and the temperature gauge is reading -33 Deg C, cold gets a totally different meaning.

From what I read is that even when it is really cold in South Africa,in the morning, it still warms up later in the day. Here we have times where the temp dips below freezing and stay there. A few years back it got to minus 25 degree F (about - 32 degree C) and stayed there for nearly 20 days. Any and I mean ANY chance for bodyheat is shot, you go out and it is sucked out of you in seconds. We could only work from 10 am till 6 pm, and NO movement after that kinda like a curfue. It was to cold even for it to snow.
