Lephlale's fire service, police and disaster control centres seemed to have slept through the commotion.

I experienced, what can only be described as an UFO about a 2 years ago just outside Kempton Park. It was just before sunset and one helluva storm was raging. Suddenly a bright object appeared in the clouds and left a trail like an afterburner from an aircraft, but only bright white. The craft looked more like a bright white fire ball than a craft.

The guy travelling with me almost rolled the car when I pointed to the object! It was in clear view for about 20-30 seconds.

I have worked on aircraft for about 7 years and I have flown quite comfortably more than a thousand times on commercial / charter / private arcraft. I've been in a King Air 200 with lighting raging around me, static electricity dancing on the wings, I've been in a 737-800 where lighting struck through the aircraft......but never in my life have I seen a flying fireball leaving a white afterburner trail.....

A couple of days later I heard about a report from the CAA that the ATC detected "activity" close to O.R. Thambo...

I don't know what you saw John, but I've seen lightning fireballs a couple of times. The first time was in a strike on the Brixton tower near my house; the second sounds more like yours: From my veranda I watched lightning streak horizontally across the sky then break up into three huge fireballs with comet tails that flew off in different directions until they burned out a few seconds later.

I once saw a slow-moving light in the sky during daytime when I was a kid. Called the airport to report a UFO and they said it was a weather balloon. :D
