Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi,

I have been involved with cars and VW's from my early twenties, But I suspect you will not appreciate what I did to them.

My first Beetle 1961, 1200 grew to 1500 and then to 2000, way back in 1972. This was a Ford V4 in which I had much fun. Handled like a dream except when going up a steep hill and a corner at full throttle. Steering got a bit light.

Now have two beach buggies with Nissan 1500 motors. So guess I am not too popular.

When time allows I am busy rebuilding in 1985 Audi Quattro.

I just wish they made cars of the same quality as the Beetle. Anyway I will keep popping in to see if I can make a contribution from time to time.

Any members in the automotive industry, who would like to have a link on my very new motoring portal, are welcome to drop me a line. I think its the best thing since the Beetle. With over 1900 links you may well be listed already, but the best thing is you do not even need to have a website.

Welcome to the Forum Ryss! Had a look at your site, it is GREAT! Nothing wrong with what you did to Beetles - that is one of the wonderful aspects of our beloved little cars, they are so diverse that one could basically do ANYTHING with 'em. On this site you'll find all kinds - the purists, the modifiers, the restorers, the grootbekke - from all walks of life.

I am personally a fan of the whole off-road division of the obsession - Baja's, buggies etc, but by hook or by crook, aan die einde van die dag, all and all, we all speak the same language!

I have seen the V4 bug a few times.... last time was in 2000 after you sold it off (I assume it was you who this guy bought it from). Nice job

I sold my V4 beetle in the late 70's. so there must be a new one floating around. I used to blow head gaskets like it was going out of fashion. I learnt many years later that the head bolts can be too long and bottom out in the block. Solution is to make the bolts shorter.

The Audi 90 Quattro, is not a Sarel special. Its a four door n\a 2.3 5 cylinder. The Coupe was much more popular, but also without the flared wheel arches.
