Aircooled VW South Africa

I got a 1966 Beetle a couple of months ago and after taking some time to sort out the paperwork, I’m finally starting to work on it. The worst job on this car is repairing the badly repaired RHS A-pillar.

I found a 70s front section, and it looks like I can use the a-pillar and wheel well areas.

Thanks. Good to know. I actually need a set of front seats for this ‘66. I don’t want to fit ‘70s seats.

Progress is slow, as I still need to decide the best way to graft in the replacement A-pillar. Hopefully I’ll have it mocked up this weekend.

I noticed the fuel gauge shows just on 3/4 .......please don't weld close to the tank !!!!

Just looking at the car, that must be classic petrol at R2 per liter.......

There must be a kink in the fuel gauge cable, as I’m sure the tank is empty. I’ll remove the tank once I start welding.

I’m busy preparing the section to be welded in. Still deciding where the best cuts would be. We plan to go on a road trip from Cape Town to Drakensberg mountains in two weeks’ time, so I’ll probably only do some work on the car by 22nd Dec. Hopefully no drastic lockdown before then.

Best is to cut the doner car 1st, then you have a temple to cut the receiving car,

much easier to get the joint right.

The family has more faith in the plastic car, so we’ll use that. I did many long distance trips in my Beetle in the past, so I wouldn’t have an issue, but majority rules!

I’ve returned from the family road trip and finally have time to work on my ‘66 Beetle. The below looks like a pile of scrap, but I’m getting closer to the piece to be installed:



I knew there would probably be some repairs to be done to the replacement piece, so I was greeted with previous brazed repairs. I’ll repair this before tacking onto car:

I decided to do more cutting. The post section was installed first in order to give access to areas to be welded and properly reinforced. Door was installed and final position noted. Post tacked in place:
