I dont have a car but im buying parts

Hi Guys

I dont have a car yet but im buying some stuff to go onto it when i eventually buy one

So far i have and intend on buying the following :

I have thus far
-Complete front suspension which in going to overhaul and fit adjusters
- set of rear flat face drums drilled to 4x100 pcd
- Ive just secured a set of Dellorto 36 DRLAs complete with intakes ,linkages and K&N Air filters.

To buy
Front disc brake conversion Kit
009 or 094 Distributor
Bug pack/Glass pack header

Once i get the car the above should take 3days to fit

I had a bug about 20 years ago, now my boys want one and im very keen to go down this road all over again .

Im I crazy in doing this before buying a car

If your Dellortos have proper "vacuum advance" ports, then that 009 distributor would be a step backwards.

I always thought tje 009 is a better dizzy to the normal vacuum advance dizzys.

Can you maybe explain to how the vacuum advance is better

Distributor from dual port beetle engines are combination of centrifugal and vacuum advance. (SVDA, standing for "Single Vacuum Dual Advance"). During full throttle operation like racing and dyno runs a centrifugal only distributor should be fine. Sometimes these are used when the carbs do not have vacuum advance ports.

When running at partial load/ not full throttle, the reduced pressure in combustion chamber results in lengthened burning time of mixture. Peak pressure then reached too late, hurting fuel economy and causing slightly hotter temperature. Sometimes flat spots as well. This is where having both centrifugal and vacuum advance helps. Although a centrifugal only setup will still limp along during part load conditions, while drinking a bit more fuel.

also, you get Bosch 009's (unobtainable today), original 1950's era 009's (with vac advance) and the currently available 009's (crap).
As Dawie said, stick with an SVDA.

As Dawie said, stick with an SVDA.
I was thinking of taking one of these crap 009s and transfer parts of an old, worn Bosch distributor. At least a new chinese 009 wouldn’t have axial play. Is this a good idea?

An old worn out Bosch distributor usually has less play and is in better condition than a brand new "replacement" distributor.
If not, then it wont take long for the new one to wear out until the above is correct.
But thats just my opinion.

They cheap for a reason, they work initialy, things quickly go south. This is what I picked up on both points & electronic china dizzies. Points last less than 100km then the bakelite is completely worn down making it impossible to set the gap, when fitting new points the screw holding the points stripped. I have a digital display timing light and can see the timing is all over the place, even the TDC mark on the Dizzy body is in the wrong place. The shaft has exessive play out the box, the rotor left its mark on the cap. The electronic dizzy tci unit gets so hot that it packs up in short order as it comes without a heat sync, the hall sensor on one never made it past the cam run in ie 15-20 min.

You must realise when you paing R1500 for a complete electronic dizzy to run out the box things dont add up, as a comparison, a quality Bosch hall sensor is R1600 & up a Bosch coil R850 & up so with the china item the only guarantee you going to get is that you going to be left on the side of the road in short order.
I will not use one of these units even if its for free.

Hi Guys

So the part buying BUG bit me again today.

Bought me a set of beam adjusters and a aluminum oil filler
