The possible reason for poor running motor was this blocked fuel filter. Busy cleaning the tank same time.Image

In faultfinding poor running on my Beetle, I found a lot of built up crap in the hose-type tank filter. Luckily Flat4Racing had some. I also replaced the plastic inline filter with a metal one. Finally I found the points gap to be too closed. The car is now running the greatest for the four years I’ve had it.

Got my nice clean tank back minus the strainer. Assume from Google that the washer holding it from the fitting side rusted away and only the strainer was still sort of stuck inside the tank fitting and was loosened during the chemical clean. Got myself a new one at Volkspares which I will fit tonight and hope to have her running sweet again

With you on this one, found the small plastic one has a small gap on the inlet which blocks up very fast, so I also replaced it with a bigger metal one and no more problems

I couldn’t get a metal filter that takes smaller than 8mm hose, but that seems like a good thing, as I heated 6mm hose and force fitted the filter. It fits so tight that it doesn’t look like clamps are needed, but I fitted them anyway due to force of habit.

She is running beautifully again with clean tank, new copper strainer and new fuel filter.
Now to change tappet cover gaskets leaking all over my heater boxes causing a foul smell of hot oil.

Turns out that I have a few leaking push rod seals that are making a real mess on the driveway.
Looks like engine out again.
Last time I tried reusing the old tubes by stretching them but I don't think I did a very good job, so have a new set but will try doing the job with the motor on its side
