I would have liked to coat more parts but it got a little pricey.

The decision was made to coat the valves and pistons to help them cope with the heat since I will be using a turbo. The ceramic coating can save the parts from temperatures that would otherwise have destroyed them as Tony mentioned. It is an added protection for when things go wrong.

I once saw a video where they coated half a piston with ceramic and took a blow torch to heat it, the uncoated half melted but the coated half was fine.

Took my beetle to a dyno day this morning and was surprised with the results.

Strange that the power drops off at 4600rpm, otherwise impressive power figures especially the high torque but something doesn't seem right, is this with the 1776cc Turbo Engine? Roughly works out to 234Hp which seems way unrealistic, a bunch more than Tony"s 2332cc Beast which I think had 170Hp

"had" is the operative word. Last dyno was 175hp on the wheels (approx 195 on the crank) and I'm pretty sure I am now closer to or over the 200 mark

Wentzel and I were corresponding a bit today. His power does seem a bit high for his engine and such low revs, but mathematically it could be right.
In general it is said that turbocharging a NA engine to 0.8bar boost will (should) double its power. His engine would make around 110hp NA. Today he was running 1.4bar boost. So thats 110+(110x1.75)=302hp
234hp on the wheels, approx 280hp on the crank. With good intercooling and good AFR, it could entirely be correct.

Only another dyno run elsewhere will show the truth.

It could be right but seems high. My best guess is around 26kw which gives me 151kw. I will still be happy with that but also. The car feels strong and drives great but could use some more tuning.

I am not sure how much I will still do to this engine since I am building the new bigger one.

1.4 bar or 20psi is some impressive boost, no wonder the power is high, sounds like you get a well sorted turbo motor there. 234 Hp on the wheels must be plenty fun in a bug.

Hi, I haven't updated in some time. I have been busy building a the new engine and it is progressing nicely I will post more once it is done.

Also thinking about some aerodynamic improvements. Was about to build and install a roll cage for structural strength but decided against it due to safety concerns for normal driving without helmet and full harness.

I think Tony Z is tired of all my ideas and queries. Thanks for bearing with me and helping with sanity checks Tony.

Time for an update.

The engine is assembled and awaiting some supporting parts.

The latest addition is a rear window "spoiler" that was made out of fibreglass. ImageImage
