Completely correct there Alan. This way I can't get speeding fines!

So having now driven it up and down the suburb, I can tell you that the engine actually pulls really well from 2000 to 3500RPM (didn't take it much beyond that). It bogs down if the revs are too low, so a bit of heel-toe was necessary to keep it in the right range. Oil pressure looks great and temps only got up to 70degC even with the start topping. I think we went about 10km, but will do another trip later in the week before changing the oil again.
Also seems to ride better than I remember... But still need to get used to the old car feel once more.

Minor update.
Second drive done and oil changed. It seems the alternator has magically come to life. I am guessing many years of sitting on the shelf allowed the brushes to oxidize, and that has not been rubbed off and is not able to generate over 13V. Unfortunately though it looks like there is still a very slight leak coming from those plugs, but it's small enough to ignore until the engine comes out again for the fuel injection install.

Found that the Speedo cable snapped due to dry grease in the gauge locking it up. I am hoping to soften it up with some penetrating lube and will then be able to replace the cable safely. Otherwise the guage is coming out.

Otherwise still pretty chuffed. Really looking forward to how it runs when the fuel injection goes in with it's less restrictive intake.

Not sure at this point. I would like to get the engine run in a little more and get the paperwork sorted for the new engine and roadworthy certificate. Also just want to enjoy the car for a bit before taking it off the road again.

I am also planning to take a trip over to Rand Airport to see the guys who make the management system to check a couple things before jumping in:
  • investigate the best way to change over to a crank trigger system, since the current trigger-per-event system is going to be very limiting early on
  • check some of the configuration with respect to some of the wiring of the injectors and ignition (not sure I agree with the phasing of the injectors on our boxer engines)
  • setting the initial tune and getting assistance with Dyno tuning and the final maps

Minor update again:

Engine still going, although it needs more fiddling to get it to idle nicely and not big down at low RPM.

But the Speedo was rebuilt and a new cable installed. It jumps around a little, but I think that will probably wear in.

Also decided to fit a washer bottle since I had time to spare. I will still use the spare as the pressure source, but had to move things around a little to make it all fit and work.

The spedo and cable shouldn't have to wear in. I found on mine that the screw in connector on the spedo went in to far and touched inside causing issues in my case. A little rubber washer and it was sorted. Also a little dirt on the inside of the spedo can cause it to stick when it gets into the right place.

Glad to hear the engine is running good.

Thanks for the tip Wentzel.
I played around with the routing as well as the lubrication, and its much better than it was when I started. But I will try that to see whether a washer helps it out a little.

Still waiting to see your updates :D :D :D

By the way, a rubber o-ring did the trick on the speedometer. Thanks for the tip! It's smooth as butter now.

Hey Tony. It sort of took a break... After getting it running the pressure dropped off, then got a promotion at work (read; a lot more work). But it's been going well so far. New alternator and exhaust have made it a much more user friendly.

Need to sort out a better Ecu and trigger wheel in order to make the Fuel injection really worth the effort.

Hi everyone! It's been a very long while since I last posted, but it's time to get back into the swing of things...

Reason for the delay was another long term project that started about 11months ago.... It's proving very expensive and even more time consuming.

But just to show some progress after reluctantly pulling the engine out, here she is! Still working well and no major issues thankfully :)

Basically all that's changed is that the fuel pump is now out, electric one is in, tested and working. Plus the manifold and throttle body now fits a little better after getting the pulley to line up with the throttle cable tube.

Glad to see you are back. Good luck with the new long term project those are very expensive.

It's a Gotech system which I already had. I decided to keep things straightforward for now and learn how to tune it with a basic trigger-per-event configuration.

Aside from the component replacement, I need to deal with a slow, but irritating leak from the flywheel seal. I thought it was from a gallery plug, but those seem tight and dry.
