What part is this?

Well after about three years without a bus I purchased myself a 2.1 Caravelle (ok it's not aircooled BUT it's a "bus")

I've been doing some small fixes this week but one of my big problems is that the auto gearbox does not kick back when you put foot in town.

Can someone maybe tell me if this part is "part" of the kick down system?

I do not know about a Microbus auto gearbox, but the automatic 411 and 412 Variants had a microswitch below the accelerator pedal, if you would 'floor' it it would close the circuit for a solenoid on the gearbox to select a lower gear.

Perhaps the Microbus has a vacuum-based system?

That looks to be a vacuum kick down and will pull a link in the gearbox to allow the box to kick down.

If you floor the petrol, you cause a high vacuum, and this will tell the box to step down one or more gears.

Thanks Herman. So I take it that the cable should not be loose then

Without vacuum, it should be not pulling, but all slack taken up.
