 Why did they were those hats when visiting Africa on "safari" - quite a common sight this. They come across as being pretty uncomfortable and bulky head gear

Sorry, but I am not convinced that is the Harties tunnnel. First of all, wouldn't the driver pull over to the left of the road in a country where cars drive on the left side? Secondly, there appears to be a sign with German on it in the pic? Thirdly, these Google pics of the two sides of the Harties tunnel look different?

My guess would be that the two gentlemen in the pic are German students on holiday and I base that assumption on their relatively young age and silly hats. They could be brothers, maybe even twins. Pic probably taken in July/August (European summer), because of the shorts they're wearing and lack of snow on the mountains in the background. If the Beetle is a late (post-war) 40's model, and probably belongs to their parents, I would reckon this pic was taken in the late 50's or early 60's as no parent will give a new car to a student to go on holiday. The road seems to be in very good condition, so the pic was probably taken a couple of years after 1945 (WW2). The German 'D' country plaque is compulsory for all vehicles crossing international borders, so the pic could have been taken in the French Alps, Switzerland, Italy or France. Not the Netherlands, cause it is flat there. The flags mounted on the back of the Beetle are probably from towns they visited with the Beetle.

According to Wikipedia, the 'BH' registration plate was issued to German vehicles registered in Hamburg between 1948 and 1956

If you zoom into the Beetle's rear view mirror, you can actually catch a glimpse of the photographer...

And I was looking at the engine lid handle thats facing upwards and at the overriders on the bumpers. The shape of the lid below the number plate also looks different but not sure if its only the photo?
