AUCTION BLOCK: 1943 KDF TYPE 60 BEETLE

Everything has to start somewhere. Some starts are relatively uninteresting, while others, like the iconic Volkswagen Beetle’s, are tied up in events much larger than itself. This particular KDF-Type 60 Beetle has its origins at the very beginning of the storied car model’s history and in the middle of one of the largest armed conflicts ever. Designed by Ferdinande Porsche under orders from Hitler, the vehicle was slated to roll off of the Wolfsburg car plant in 1939, but was postponed as Nazi forces moved into Poland and WWII began. During that period of time between the beginning of the war and the eventual Allied victory in Europe, a small number of cars were still made and given to high profile members of the Nazi party. This one in particular was made in for the head of the German Red Cross in Berlin in 1943. Now up for auction, this historic vehicle still features all of the original KDF parts and according to Dr. Robert Mac Jones, a collector of KDF models, is one of the best known restored cars of its type in the world. The model is expected to fetch anywhere between $275,000 – $350,000.

Very nice. Look at the old distributor cap.

If I read on the Samba it looks like it did not sell at the auction. Some discussion on it:

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.
