I had basically the same idea of securing the clam shell as you have got only I will be using two pins and a different frame setup

I've got a pin on either side.

So it's 3 hinges (left , middle and right)

2 pins on the frame

A piston in the Centre

And a latch on either side .

That is a very nice idea for the clamshell, thanks for giving me ideas when I start doing mine
