T1 door hinge pin removal
Good evening gents, anybody got some advice on removing door hinge pins on a beetle, i know there are some tools availabled to do the job, but they are few and far between and veeery expensive for a one time job. Anything that requires a pneumatic hammer or any kind of violence is not an option perhaps there is someone out there willing to assist with the right kind of tool? Much appreciate the help. Deo

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
You have ruled out the only sure fire thing that will take out the pin.
That is an impact hammer with a hardened pin, and lots of Q20 or WD40.
Your only other option now is to spray lots of Q20 over and over again, heat in-between and when loose knock it out with a center punch.

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
Managed to sort out my problem, fabricated a crude but effective c-clap tool to do the, tried it on an old door and the pin popped right out!

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
Used an impact socket at the top when the pin started emerging.
This is the car we'll be trying it on tomorrow so we can fit new, threaded top hinge pins. '74 bug, fresh paint. Also did up some nice Rostyles for it, powder coated silver then painted glossy black inserts

Awesome looking Rostyles, I have them on my Trekker which I would like your advice on.
Who did you get to powder coat and would you recommend them to me please?
Thank you.
Richard

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
Hi Madbones, had it done in Silverton at NPA powder coaters, was around R260 per rim, they did a good job, the sand blast to clean it up, left a few grains of sand here and there but overall nice job number is (012)8048653 , speak to Willem

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
The wheels look nice, but after the first wash or drive in the rain, not going to look nice anymore.
The powder coating is unable to get into the groove / gap between the outer rim & inner face of the wheel, as soon as moisture gets in the rust shows. If I were you I would try & seal it with some clear silicone, not a 100% efficient as the silicone will discolour over time.

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
Rui is right, the best way to do sandblasting and powdercoating is to split the rim and have it re-welded once powdercoated.. no crevices for any rust to develop in..

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
Best to just paint your rims and avoid powder coating.

Re: T1 door hinge pin removal
The seam bothered me as well, its been taken care of though, i had 2k matched to the same colour as the powdercoat, added a little plasticiser to the mix and ran a bead around the seam with a 20cc injection, can hardly see it and looks 100 times better, these rims will last a VERY long time. Powder coating is by far much stronger than painting, frankly less of a hassle aswell. Paint can chip when the careless guys at the tyre shop fit your new tyres and therby cause leaks
