1976 German Look T1 1835cc turbo

Post by Gerlach »

So i decided to start my long overdue threat of my 1976 German Look T1 and in memory of my uncle Vincent Torr that past away September 2011 just before i finish the beetle. Will post photos up that i took that time when i started my restoration and will find more that is still store on my old IDE Hard drives. It took me close to 5 years to get her finish , and all the work was done by my self with only the paint work done by my father.

Image

Busy building the motor for it know. It will be a 1835cc motor with a CB Performance hide away turbo setup, but i will give more info later on this build.

A bit of info and history about my 1976 beetle. She was build in 1975 and registered in 1976 and were a snow white color . Between 1976 and 1990 this beetle was used by the South African Government in Free State "following the number plated's info that i have received". Family member, my uncle " my mother, sister husband" work that time in court and bought this beetle for her birth day in 1990 when it went on action. Between 1990 and 2006 this beetle had a lot of action while it was in the Free State on LadyBrand. It had a little fuel burn, someone drove in to it on the right side rear fender wing, hand brake broke one day in the drive way and the beetle ended up again's the tree bending the rear bumper and some more small things. In that time it went in for paint work and fixing of the dings and dongs and on it.

In 2006 my mother sister gave the beetle to my sister to use it as her university vehicle to drive around , so we went up in 2006 December to LadyBrand to go collect the beetle, and so in 2007 , my sister drove her around for 3 months in Stellenbosch, and a student isn't a student if he/she drives a beetle on university . hahaha. My father respray the car white again and fixed some of the small things that wasn't working on the vehicle. 3 months latermy sister decided to get her self a other car because the beetle gave some problems, so she ended up standing by our house , and were just been driven ones a month. In that time our next door neighbor bought him self insanely crazy 2.4 turbo beach buggy. This thing was hell of fun, expensive to maintain and damn fast , like 10.6sec fast down a 1/4 strip fast.

And so the air-cooled bug bit me. My uncle told me that i can take the beetle and so i become the new owner of her, but he will keep it on his name for me and pay the yearly licence because it was cheaper to keep it on FS plates.

And so the planes started, What color, what style, what wheels, and the list go's on. My dad wanted to drop the roof by 2 inch, but i didn't like that plan. And so the stripping started. The pan were really clean because most of her life time she was been driven inland. founded some ot spots of small rust on the body, but that was small normal things for an beetle that was older then me. I striped the beetle till only the empty shell was standing. Planes weren't taken to take the shell of the floor pan because everything still look good around that spots. And so my 5 years of building my beetle started. A lot of time went in redoing the panels , replacing the right rear wing and the list go's on and on and on and collecting new parts for my build.

My planes ended up to go the Calooker Californian look. A saw a photo of SSP yellow one, and my head was stuck on that look. Here is a pic of it:

And then one day i come down on a pick of an German Look beetle. i still remember it was in a VW Ultra mag and still have the mag. it was this beetle:

And i told my dad that this was what i wanted to build, and everything was history.

In middle 2009 i started to get the body prep to get it painted. Plan was still to go the yellow color, but what yellow color? I wanted to spray it Porsche yellow, so ended up with LKL 13 M Lemon Crome Yellow toner. 15 December 2009, we start painting. About close to 9 liters of paint went in to this car. My dad sprayed about 5 liters on it, and i left for a month standing so it can set. Started flatting and found that we need to paint it more, So we sprayed another 4 liters out on it. So the flat work started again. i think that time a starting to dream of sanding paper so much sanding i did on this car. Then the fun part starting of buffing the car and starting to see the yellow color coming out.

Here is some pics of the prep work and painting

Seeing those pics of the prep and spray brings back memories when I sprayed my baja 14 years ago, was also a bright yellow Rally Yellow if I remember. I remember all the wet sanding and buffing work, took a good few days on my baja.

Good luck with the 1835 build and the rest of the project

One work on this build that you need to take your time with because bending that outer scraper , a lot of money down the drain then.

Suspension time. Dave from Flat Four Racing build the Beam for me with adjusters . I rebuild the Spindles on my own with new Heavy duty link pins and king pins set, Why do i need to pay someone to do it if i can do it my self and learn out of it. Change to disc brakes on her to.
