My New "VW" Aircooled project.

Hi Guys.

Well as most of you know, have been working my a$h off, and have very little time for my toys.

So just to keep my hand in I got me a project that takes me back to the 1st form of transport I "bought" for my self as an 13 year old.

The Story;-
Was sent on an errand by my Mom, to deliver eggs and Honey to a family friend.
When I got there, the owner was in his workshop, and on entering, spotted a Moped hanging on the wall.
Being covered in plastic, I could not identify it, and on asking, was told to mind my own business.
After sweet talking the old man for hours it seamed, he opened up.
Was told it was the only form of transport they had in the old country, and when coming over to South Africa, brought it with.
Here they found distances to be too great for the moped, and got a run down truck to move around.
Thats when it went to the wall, so to speak.
Asking if he was going to use it again, he said NO, and I played the pity card, and said that if I do not get a form of transport, I would be stuck on the farm and not be able to even go to school.
Having hit a nerve, I think, he agreed to not sell it to me, as he had wowed never to sell it, but would let me have it for a swap of a goat.
This was great news, but where was I to get a goat
Oh well, to cut a long story slightly shorter, I bought a goat for R8 ( yes eight Rand), and made the swap.
Fixed the old Girl up and used her for the next 5 years.
Good memory's.

So what was she.......I hear you all ask........???????
Well she was a 1959 DKW Hummel 3 speed.

NOW I hear unrest in the ranks,......But your heading......this is so wrong.......yes it may be aircooled.........but thats no VW !!!!

Well now the way I see it is,
DKW was part of Auto-Union, Auto-Union has become Audi, Audi owns VW,....... OK thats not right,.. VW owns Audi, so its an "VW"

Ok , OK, it was a long shot, and it was never going to fool you guys,

But I am still chufft with my new toy.

Not going to resort it, but get it running and keeping her "as found" rat look.

Thanks for looking.

Herman

Thanks Paul.
Yes started getting parts for her, not easy, but found a place in Germany that has most every thing.
Strange to see there is such a big following in the world for these little gems.

Thanks Tony,
Yes no Goat, but also no lemon...

Engine turns over with good compression,

No spark, but will have a look as the wires are all over the place but where they should be.

Hard to find parts are Head light, and HT coil for spark.

Other have been found such as tubes, cables, tail light, condenser, points and front suspension main items, which are big elastics......

Will keep updating this "project thread".

Herman

Thanks guys,

as the bike guys laughed at me, looking for tubes for the DKW, I had to go to the Pro-Bike stores, Yes the posh way of saying bicycle store.

Managed to get two "near fit" tubes and had them filled with this magic slime to stop punchers.

Also ordered my 1st shipment of parts from Germany to start getting it running.

Boy, that Euro is a killer, The shipping alone was a toss-up between courier and buying the plane.

Will post pic's of order when it gets here.

Thanks

Herman

Nice one Herman!
Richard (Junior) has two of these, and took one up to Speedweek last year. In the videos of this year's event there was another one!

Thanks Barry,

Yes was very jealous when he got his, and even wanted to buy one off him at one stage.
They are not fast, but a lot of fun at events and shows.
Have you given my probable project any thought, and worked out a approx. price maybe.??

Thanks Harry,

These are a blast to have, brings back the past, and all the fun of that time.
They still out there, and have found a good parts supply, so get your self one, you will not be sorry.

Thanks Brandenmance,

Yes this is pure fun, stick it into the VW bus, or on the Beetle roof rack and off you go.
Trust me, they make good scramblers, have trailed my old one year after year, and it still went.

Only a little Herman - we need to talk it through. It could get to be very expen$$$$ive depending on how you decide to tackle it. Would be an awesome vehicle though....

Hi

Nice to see more interest in DKW 2 wheelers. Apart from a bunch of DKW 4 wheelers, I have over 30 DKW 2 wheelers of which there are 10 Hummels in various states from excellent to parts. Also have a lot of new and used parts - unfortunately the scarce parts such as lights, carburettors, tyres... I do not have.
