My August '57 bug
Greetings all,
After more than a month of tinkering, I now am ready to slap up some pics of my rather splendid August '57 Beetle. No, it isn't an Oval, but the first of the "baby" rear windows of it's time. The Speedo is marked "08 57" as well as the ashtray itself, it's casing and multiple other parts of the car too. I have had more than enough people in-the-know verify the car as a '57.
HUGE gratitude to our dear Bill Noble for all of his many hours of input and assistance with this car. I have been on the receiving end of a plethora of period correct parts and gifts from him. Bill, you ROCK!
Also on the thank-you list is Eric Van Staveren whom I bought some truly outstanding items from for the car like an original SG ignition switch and Huff key, correct indicator stalk (aftermarket one had been fitted), original cardboard inner dash cover in spotless condition, a lovely '50's bud vase (yet to be fitted) and... wait for it.... a magnificent mid-to-late '50's Hazet Tourist tool kit!
I've also found an August '57 owners manual in English that is on its way via the post.
The car came with a Bekowa roof rack with all it's original clamps and rubbers, VW mud flaps and venetian rear window blind. It didn't have a fuel reserve valve, brake fluid reservoir cap or correct German running boards; all of which have been sourced and fitted (thanks Rui!)
Take a look at some pics I snapped today...

FYI, your Hazet tool kit dates from 1953-55.

Re: My August '57 bug
Verry nice Gavin , I must say having owned both I really do like the 58/59 with the slighly larger rear window... I miss my 58 every day and my oval every 2nd day

My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

Really? How interesting. I'd found some info on these kits on a Porsche forum (via TheSamba) and from what I derived, it was mid to late '50's. Either way, I'm very happy with it. It's something I've always wanted

Re: My August '57 bug
Yes, I think my info comes from the same site. The giveaway is the 36mm spanner, which was last used in 1955, after which it was replaced by a 36mm/21mm spanner. For my 56 oval I have a Hazet set with the old tool layout sticker showing the 36mm spanner, while the set contains a 36mm/21mm spanner, which suggests it's one of the early sets following the change and they were using up the old stock of stickers.GavinHuart wrote:Hi Christian, fig wrote:FYI, your Hazet tool kit dates from 1953-55.

I love your Beetle by the way. I had to turn it down so I'm glad it went to a good home.
