Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi all,

I bought a crew cab a few weeks ago and have been busy getting it back on the road.
Strange enough, this dc is the first kombi i can remember seeing and thunking: this is really cool.
The PO bought a gearbox from me a few months ago and i mentioned to him that should he ever want to sell, he must please give me a call. So about a month ago he called me and said he got another car for hia building team.
We had a look at the dc. It had been standing for about 2,5-3 years due to the faulty gearbox. We came to an agreement and a week later i towed it home.
The crew cab needs a lot of work but is surprisingly straight. The black paint job looks horrible and several places shows buts of surface rust. It has a big old ugly radiator up front for the jetta 1.8 engine in the back....
So far I have:
- replaced the gearbox
- new starter
- cleaned the carb
- replaced the side and back windows,
-replaced the drivers door,
-repaired driver and back seat
- fixed a LOT of wiring
- driven it around the block feeling like a king...
And and and...

I busy with:
-sorting the carb settings out
- fitting 3 point seat belts for my kids in the back
- i need to repair te floor at the back door
-reconnect the oil pressure and water temp guages

Future,
-fit original rims with hubcaps
- move the radiator to be less visible
- repaint the bus
- refurb the front suspension.
- drive it every day and enjoy it....

O yes and last night i broke a bone in my foot, so now, i can drive or do much on the crew cab.... Pics to follow tomorrow.

Sorry to hear you put your foot in it.. but sounds like you moving real fast with this bus.

I TOO AM LOOKING FOR A CREWCAB TO USE AS MY DAILY VEHICLE.
I HAVEN'T BROKEN A BONE IN MY FOOT THOUGH BUT I DO KNOW ABOUT BEING UNEMPLOYED AS I HAVE BEEN DOING ODD JOBS TO KEEP GOING FOR SOME YEARS NOW AND THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE BEEN EXTREEMLY QUIET.
ALL THE BEST AND I HOPE YOU COME OUT ON TOP.
LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING SOME PICS OF THE BUS......STOP TEASING AND POST SOMETHING FOR US.

So here are some pics of the bus the day i went to look at it..... It was "restored abiut 8 years ago" before the PO bought it.
It worked really hard for 5,5 years and then stood still for 2,5 years due to th faulty gearbox.

Hi Mark.

To be honest, i think my 71 bus (dr, John) has far more work imo, but the double cab has been challenging as well. And it is far from done.

Driving it around the block last friday way awesome though.

Just another update - i managed to take some photos today, but couldn't do much else....

My sisters son helped me to remove the kick panels from my early bay so we cut some for the double cab. They not done and need some tweaking, but its already far better than what I had ...... None.

Some things i have done,
Removed more than 30 meters of useless wire, several ends connected to nothing, others connected to the battery directly. Removed 3 unused switches
Removed an after market window washer bottle (still need to install the original)
Installed a glove box
Replaced the indicator stalk, cleaned the wiper stalk, replaced the plastic surrounding the steering wheel
Replaced the ignition (and got a new key cut that actually works)
Fixed some globes on the dash.
Swapped steering wheel - still need to assemble the centre cap/hooter and clean the steering wheel.

Making kick panels
And so on....

Anyway, here are some update pics. Doesnt look like much but compared to the first lot of photos, you can see the progress.
