Type 181 project (My first) Advise welcome

Post by Heron »

Hi all. My name is Heron and this is my first project car. The car is not in running condition, it has no seats and everything is stolen of the car. The paint job is bad and some body panels need some work and i think i paid way too much.

Most important is: I Love it. Image

Sterkte met die restorasie Heron. Ek dink nie jy het n fout gemaak. Op die ou einde is dit n kar waarvan jy hou en wat jy kan geniet saam met die familie. And that is priceless.
Laat weet maar waar ek kan help.

Congrats.

Many people would love to own a thing, myself included. Seeing as they are quite SKAARS i would say that the value is what its worth to the buyer. all that matters is that you are happy with what you paid for it. You have quite an exclusive ride and I believe when completed it will be worth every sent to you and your family. i would get it mobile first and ride it a bit before stripping it, as a stripped down project can be quite overwhelming. source all you need then do it in one go.

Just my 2c

Thanks for the advice. My wife would not like my garage to be filled with a car that cannot start for too long. First thing i did was to get it to "the buggy shop" in Pta and they serviced it for me and got it to start. I had the carburator serviced and fitted a new exhaust and new battery. Also had the distributer servised.

At least now the thing :-) can start and actually sounds great compared to my Beetle. Obviously my Beetle also needs a new exhaust. I think i may ut this exhaust pipe on my Beetle and have the proper thing exhaust sourced and fitted to the type 181

One thing I remember when I saw your thing last was that the front beam was a dogs breakfast, it was badly butchered BJ unit, the welding...... I would consider changing it.

Nice project. Looks like the type 181 is probably the easiest VW to convert from lhd to rhd. (Dashboard easy, pedal cluster and maybe steering box arm from rhd beetle). Then it would be a 182.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).
