61 Karmann Ghia

Post by allens1979 »

Hi All

Recently purchased a 1961 Karmann Ghia "Minnion" Below is a current pic and then what I want to do with it.
It will basically be stock outside, but I want to update it with some modern comforts inside and a more powerfull power plant and suspension / brakes.

Any advise welcomed.

Allen ... groovy car. Since you're asking for advice, here's mine. Leave it just the way it is. OK, maybe loose the eyebrows. Otherwise it looks perfect.

Definitely leave it the way it is. It already has that cool classic look to it.

Have to agree with everyone here,....leave it as is, it will retain its value better.

Its like adding water colour on to a Mona Lisa....

Adds no value,

but kills the master piece.

I am pretty sure that paint is not original so a repaint in period colours can only add to the value and BRM reps wont hurt either I say go for it

I have a rust free 66 also a bunch of stuff to add on and bought some empi rims etc then I realized the growing value in the cars so am repainting to original spec dumped the idea of all modern extras and am only adding a set of real sprint stars All period correct extras and original bits only. That way u will grow value and have a cool car. So yip I agree on the paint but don't be tempted with modern upgrades or non original extras

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies, makes sense what you say about the period correct paint and originality and value.

Think when I start the project will keep it original, also would like to do a KG Razor type.

Allen I say respray the car in your own colour scheme. Opinions are only opinions. The only one thats important is yours.

That yellow colour of your Ghia, just like Impi suspects, is probably not the original colour to begin with. So doing a colour change is not an unreasonable option.
Unless you are doing a resto as close to original, after you found the correct colour scheme of your Ghia, then go ahead.

I added the Ghia Sedan and Vert colour charts I have for 60 - 61 and 61 - 62

Hope this helps

Muds

In Germany originals are more valuable than conversions to your own taste... but it's your car...
....more powerfull power plant and suspension / brakes.
Everything is possible - depends on your money and time - eg. up to an Porsche 993 setup as nearly fastest on the track:

Color could be found on this German website: http://www.karmann-ghia-archiv.de/farba ... arben.html

Attention: the color transition of your picture on the windshield is drawn incorrectly - it is fluent with the the line of windows from the sideview!

Hi Muderick

Thank you for the charts, You and Impi are correct, the yellow is not the original colour. Where the paint is chipping I can see 2 different shades of blue. Gulf blue as per your chart and then pastel blue as the bottom colour. The pastel blue is more prominent around the engine bay area. I Suspect the entire car was pastel blue from factory. Will confirm once I start stripping.

Do any of you guys know where I can get a complete rubber kit for this car locally as well as the chrome trim for the windows, waterbead and side of the car?

Tx
