'62 Beetle
OK, so after an extended waiting period, I fetched my '62 Beetle from Grand Slam where the car has been in storage for the past year or two.
First off, the drive home was amazing and really fun. The engine idles and runs very smoothly. She ran quite comfortably at 55-58 mph all the way home without so much as a hitch. The clutch engages as smooth as butter with absolutely no judder or snatching at all and the gears change beautifully. There's no play or rattling on the gear lever at all.
The ride is very comfortable and although the Nor'wester bullied us across lanes from time to time on the way home, it was a helluva fun ride.
The interior is surprisingly good given the age of the car and complete for the most part. The vehicle has been re-done inside at some time in the past and it still looks very neat. It's very dirty inside at the moment and there is going to be some serious elbow grease needed to get the grime and dust out.
The exterior, while not faultless, is good. Good to fairly good. Nothing that can't be taken care of in good time.
As is to be expected there will be a few other nigglys that need taking care of. Wiper system doesn't work, the horn doesn't work & in a nutshell the electrics aren't great (despite a new 6V battery). The car is in need of new set of tyres, probably shocks and definitely a complete brake overhaul. The brakes work fairly well but may either be glazed or the shoes are rock hard. Some new shoes, cylinders & fluid are in order There's no brake shudder though so it would seem that the drums are still OK. A light skim should do the trick.
Doors hinges are a little worn and hang slightly. Some new pins (maybe 1st oversize) and a ream will be needed.
Some parts will need re-chroming and some rusty bumper stays, bolts, nuts and washers will be replaced with stainless versions.
Nearly all the rubbers need replacing. I will be looking for top quality body rubbers where needed.
There is a positive camber at the rear which I want straightened out towards a neutral (or very slight) negative stance for better road stability. Maybe by a mil or so.
We definitely need new rear tail light lenses. These are really knackered from the sun and general exposure but still whole in every respect.
I will start with a really good clean up inside and out and then a really serious polish and buff to the exterior. For now, I want to keep the car out of the wet because there are a few rust areas starting up which I want to nip in the bud. I will definitely have a complete respray done at some stage. This was done once before so I don't have to worry about ruining the original paintwork. This is the one area that I am going to spend a few notes getting absolutely perfect.
For now, as long as there's no rain, I am going to be clocking up some mileage in the driver's seat. The fixing can go on as and when the mood (and wallet) allows. The car will be kept as original as possible.
*Edit - We're not a family of car namers, but this old guy will be known as 'Joe'.

Re: '62 Beetle
Joe is now parked in the toy room next to his younger boeties and under cover, away from the winter elements.
