My 72 restoration

Post by Brandenmance »

Hi All I thought I would show you my 72 bay restoration. I Bought it at the end of Jan this year and so far I have pulled the motor and gear box out for a rebuild. It was only firing on 2 pistons, the cam was in its ???. Redone cv's, engine bay and all front steering. The Very nice chap that I bought the van from told me to keep the van until it was ready for roadworthy how nice of him. So I made him put it on paper you never know what could go wrong there. LOL. first test they failed it on few things and the second time it went straight through. Dam I was so happy. The following day straight to register it in my name and once again no hiccups. But I'm sure the list of things will never end on things to do. I have even built new cupboards to go in. Last weekend I totally gutted the poor van to just a shell and off for rust removal and a new coat of paint. Went and had a look today and the guys are doing such a great job. Should have van back next week. :D

My upholstery should be done a week or two after I get the van back. I have already started on head lining and side panels. The rest is been done by the pros, a bit above my league. Then it will be the fun part of putting it all back together again.

Are you using the remains of the original Cock's Camper interior or rebuilding it completely?

Hows the condition of that concertina style material in the roof?

I had to bin the interior as it was fitted in 1978 and well used. As I was taking it out the chipboard was just falling apart. I think just the vinyl was holding it together. The roof material is still in good fare condition but it makes the van very hot in site. I have taken it apart so I can replace it with a cooler canvas. Might just go with the red and white stripes.

Spent the weekend getting all the door locks and windows cleaned up so I can start filling all the holes when I get the van back this week. Spent 2 hours just trying to fit eyelids to my head light until I realized it won't work. Found no solution on the net so I made my own mode. 10min later problem solved. :hangloose:

Been doing all the new rubbers for the windows. What fun it was cutting the 90 degrees that go up against the 1/4 vents. So lucky I bought extra. Van is due to be back on Friday the latest from panel shop that is if I get the chance to fetch it. Went to go have a look today and it looks so sweeeet!

Got the van back on Friday looking really good. Put doors on with all new rubbers. New tail lights. New front indicators. Took me a day just to do the roof lining. Tomorrow I will have a go at putting the rest of the windows in. It's got to go back to spray shop next week to have a few touch ups done on places I'm not to happy with. But over all I can't wait to take it on the road again.

Where did you get the rubbers for the vent windows. Was it flat rubber that just slotted in the grove?
I can't seem to find thin flat rubber for the beetle vent windows can you help?
Thanks

@Bushpig have you tried pro auto rubber in boksburg.

They make all kinds of automotive and non automotive rubbers and vinyls. If you have a sample they can tell you immediately.
