The Platinum Road is a guide book on the N4 toll road, with interesting facts, history and anecdotes about the route.

My oval was originally found along the route of the N4 and it is one of the stories in the book. The story goes that in the 1990s, before construction of the road started, the land had been expropriated and the route surveyed and pegged out. A work crew was dispatched along the route to map out what works were required to clear the route for construction. At some point they came across a locked barn and, when they broke it open, they found this old volksie abandoned inside. The foreman recognised it wasn't just some scrap old Beetle and arranged for it to be sold via a Pretoria classic car dealer, and it was bought by John Watson, who used to have an enormous collection of vintage cars, aircraft and other old machines. John sold the car on to Werner Alker, who put it in his "museum", which was so crowded with cars nobody could really get in to view anything. A few years ago Werner started to clean out his place and thin out the herd and sold the car back to John Watson, who immediately flipped it and it was bought by Richard Mallabone (Madbones), who showed it for the first time at Pretoria Cars in the Park in 2009.

After seeing it, mrsfig and I started harrassing Richard beyond the point of rudeness to sell it to us. Richard always laughed and said he'd give us first option, but that he'd bought the car as a keeper and it wouldn't be offered any time soon. We continued our harrassment regardless. About nine months later Richard called me and said things in his life had changed and he was selling most of his old cars and that if I didn't take the oval immediately it would be advertised that day. mrsfig and I were just leaving on a two-week bus road trip, so I told Richard to consider it sold and we'd speak again in two weeks time. I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it; after all my harrassment I thought it would be uncool to haggle. Fortunately, when I called him back after our return, the price was fair and I had the cash and the rest is history ...
