Hi All I have now got the History of my Beetle from the PO so here goes.
The PO's name is Eddie Dry and his father's name was also Eddie Dry known as Snr and Jnr.
Jnr remembers him and his Dad jumping on a bus to get to Mc Douling Motors in Booysens Jhb in 1961 where Snr had to go and pay for his brand new Red Beetle his Dad had especially ordered for himself, his Dad had the R600 cash in his pocket to pay for the car, that was the full purchase price back then.
Jnr now in his mid 60's was 13 at the time his Dad purchased the Beetle and clearly remembers the day his proud Father brought the car.
Snr had also requested that the car be fitted with optional extras which were the Parcel shelf, radio, stone garuds front and rear ,mud flaps, chrome air vent ribs above the engine bay and the steering wheel cover.
Snr went down to the South Coast on his 1st holiday and he ordered a set of 3 matching suit cases from Mc Douling Motors especially for that trip.
The car was only used on his annual leave and the odd trip around Jhb, he use to catch the bus to work and every Sat he use to wash and clean the car before parking it back in the garage.
in 1980 snr decided that it was time to sell the car but Jnr wanted it to stay in the family so he swopped the Beetle for a 1978 golf one of the 1st ones made.
Jnr had the car from 1980 to 2013 when it was sold to me as Jnr now wanted to retire and travel in his new motor home and that's when I purchased the car.
Mr Eddie Dry Snr was born in 1923 and passed away in Dec 1995.
The Beetle as it was called was Snr's first and only new car he brought.
Jnr also only used the car around Jhb and it was cleaned on a regular basis and garaged all its life.
I will carry on lovingly caring for the car as did the PO's,and I would like to thank Jnr for shearing the history of the car with us.
Thanks.
Terry
I forgot to mention that when Snr purchased the car it was just after the Rand was introduced and the R600 in notes where brand new that he paid with.
Mc Douling motors also recalled the car as there where problems with the head bolts or some thing to that effect and that was the 1st and only time the motor was removed.
