Gadgets and Gizmos

Post by Imagine »

Hi There!

I have an old beetle that I've done up a little. Not sure on the year though sadly. I'm all new to this beetle thing, but I've always wanted one.
Anyways I wanted to know what you guys think on adding all the modern day things to the car? For example Im interested in things like a central locking system and electric windows as well as maybe aircon and maybe power steering. Anybody know of a few places in JHB that would do such things? and what it would land up costing me?

I also have a few patches of chipped paint that I need to iron out, probably a full body repsray is in order. Any ideas on this, or where to go?
Thanks guys!

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Hi central locking and electric windows should be easy there are universal kits available and some alarm systems have the central locking option. I installed central locking on my beetle without problems. Air-con and power steering is a bit more compicated. I have heard about electric air-con systems that can be installed without the compressor running off the engine but never seen one or know how effective they arem

Good luck with your upgrades

I find this system very effective in cooling the interior of my Beetle.

They are fitted as standard equipment on beetles and come as an option on most buggys!

Haha Ret,
I always wondered what those were for..
But the bonus with the aircon is it comes with a heater for these chilly winter mornings, I dont think the standard "aircon" could help much with that..

LOL!
If its heat you're after then I guess I should not mention what happens when you pull the little red hand brake up!

Jokes aside, some of the little cars from China have the electric aircon units!
Not sure if it can be fitted to a beetle, but will be an interesting project! :hangloose:

Dude!
A well maintained Beetle heater system is brilliant! :hangloose:
I've seen a plastic lunch box warp and deform when left in front of the rear heater vent!

Ask how many drivers have burned their right foot because the vent is close to the accel pedal

The stock system (if it works properly and doesnt fill the car with exhaust fumes) is super efficient and pretty quick to operate. It works by blowing air over the HOT exhaust pipes and then into the car.
For cooling, turn the 1/4 windows around until the air hits you in the face and turns the inside of the car into a mini-hurricane.
