Hey Kafer,

well done on saving Oupa...he is soooo my kinda kar... :hangloose: but flip they are sooo scarce to find at reasonable prices...

Antway, restoration looks great - however...why would you change the colour if it was NOT black originally?? just personal preference??

Please inbox me Joggies details if you dont mind.

1960 Beetle called Oupa

Post by Kafer74 »

I found a door at last from Ferdie Radel. He told me it was used on one of their racing cars years ago. I almost feel too sorry to use it for Oupa because of it's history and would rather have hung it in my bar. It looks very cool 8)

The search continues for a replacement driver side door...

After a long and hard search, I eventually found and bought a door from Bennie Homan in Vanderbijlpark (VWOldies). At last the final fitting can start.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

In the spraypainters world there is apparently something called "fish eyes". This is something that occurs when you spray over dust particles. Joggie found three fish eyes on the side panel. He fixed them and then tried to spray a primer coat. Unfortunately the primer did not want to take on the black and now he has to sand down the whole panel to the bare metal and start over. :(

That "cracking" is what happens when primer is applied directly onto a layer of clearcoat, the prep for priming was not done properly, clearcoats need to be removed entirely not just flattened as they probably did in your case.

Hi Rui, the clear coat has not been applied yet, it was / is only the paint itself
