My new Splitty

Post by Burnthosetyres »

I took the plunge and bought a Splitty project. She needs a lot of work, but I'm not scared. I have a few other cars, but mainly American Muscle. I have some idea's in my head already, but well see how we go...

:hangloose: congrats on your new bus - good luck with the restoration. Where are you based, I saw a Pinetown registration plate on one of your Chevs I think ?
Tell us more about the bus, where is it from and all that, all ready in primer ? Was it complete with interior, seats, etc ? Looks pretty straight, have you done prep yourself?
Cheers !

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Yes I'm in Cowies Hill. Truth be told, bought bus this week, will be delivered next Wed. Seller in Rietfontein PTA. He has done 75% of bodywork. Still a section or rust on rear roof / gutter channel and needs replacement floor. Looks straight... time will tell....

Good luck with finishing the restoration, there's still a fair amount of work left.

She's offloaded and safely in garage / shed at Harden Auto. Now where to start. Gonna tackle bodywork, so need to order floor for cab and rear floor. Phoned and mailed Jacques for quote. Then need to get motor. As I stated, she came with running 1300 and 1600 twin port sub assembly. Going to sell both. Then need to look for a 2l off more modern bus, and gearbox. Is it better to buy a later model, bus and strip or just look for motor as a starting point on Junkmail / Gumtree? :hangloose:

She's patiently wating her turn...
So it seems the way to go is 2L Type 4 motor, solex carb, torquey cam, remove reduction box, long 4th gear, straight axle conversion, front lowering kit, disk break conversion... Classic BRM 5 stud rims.... and Bobs your uncle? Have I missed anything?

What is Delux trim?

Googled Safari windows, and found supplier, they're a must. Did not know that's what they're called. Not sure on trim, need to decide on colour first. Any Splitty owners in Durban? I believe the owner of Camjet in Riverhorse Valley drives the green & white bus.

there is a guy here on the forum that brings in the safari windows and deluxe trim his name is Kevi Govender.
you will find him under kts customs.
safari windows leak.
i would suggest you do a whole lot of research before deciding what to do.
if you want to go IRS in the rear then i will be interested in buying your rear drive train.
go look at this thread.....that is why i will never drop any of my buses.

Ordered new front and rear floor from Jacques, on time freight. My Rims arrive today. So little progress. Have also engaged with 3 Splitty owners in KZN to discuss Pro's and cons... My bus has front seats, but not rear. Will seats from a bay window fit? I was also thinking doing rear seats facing each other, pick nick style, are there any disadvantages to that?
