ive been toying with the idea for a long time to get electronic ignition, so I could get rid of the points, condensors and tempramental crap. I looked at a distributor on a chico, and it looked very similar to a 009. So I sourced a chico dizzy, took at apart and transferred the electronic stuff over to the 009. I had to drill 2 new holes, swop the top of the shafts and cut a slit for the electric male connector and a few other minor spares. Everything sems to fit extremely well. I got a quote from Goldwagen for a wiring harness and ignition module. Total cost is round R 260.00 and I can even keep my current coil ( according to the dude at goldwagen)

have not done that mod yourself, but if you are basically running a chico setup then you need a chico coil.
Electronic ignitions and points ignitions use different type of coils.

Did the exact same thing on my beetle 3 and a half years ago. works like a charm! you will need the electronic coil though. i have never had any isues with mine.

Same here, did the conversion in the beginning of the year and never had issues. Car starts, idles better and seems more responsive. Just my 50c worth.

Thank you guys, Just proves that there is nothing new under the sun- Amazing though to think that the dizzy used in the 1.4 chico still for sale is basically the same( except for the shaft) as the dizzy designed way back and used in the beetle. Good to hear im heading in the right direction. Fitted it today and confirming thepolarity before switching on and startup

I am looking to do something similar. Want some advise please.
Can I use a golf 1 dizzy(with vacuum advance) and modify the piece that goes into the engine and keep the rest standard. Then buy the coil that goes with the dizzy.
Will something like this work and is it possible. I did read of people that have done something like this but can not find much detail on the mod itself.

I do the same mod on most of my customers cars works beautifully still uses the original coil.

The old Alfas 33 have a bosch dist. and it's just a drop in swap, I cut the side plate off mine and sanded that area down to look stock, had to use the coil which is also Bosch! All worked lekker till an exhaust valve broke (still had the vw part nº on) and stuffed up the head and the piston) My 69 1500 was working like a Swiss clock

I've done both the golf conversion as well as acuspark no issues on both
Acuspark is quick and very easy

Im using the accufire module and its worked good so far.
