Road Test of a 1979 Autovilla Bay Bus

Post by Pine »

I've always had a soft spot for these Proudly South African Gentle Giants - wouldn't mind owning one some day - that is when I can afford to fill up the 2 x 56l fuel tanks!

Yeah! One of those khaki-green Jurgens Autovillas without the compartment above the drive's cab? I LUUUUUUUUV 'em!

I've always wondered: are the hubcaps on an Autovilla the same as those fitted many years ago to Valiant cars?

Ja the kakie colour fits the bush idea well! The hubcaps is actually a Datsun design that they used on the 240C and 300C, you might remember them, big old cars! The Jurgens J was stamped in place of the D. You know where I can find some? I just use normal type 2 hubcaps. Cant find originals. The decals is also very scarce.

If you drive on the N12 towards Potchefstroom, just outside Soweto there are usually some locals with 3 - 5 stands next to the road with A LOT of hubcaps. I often stop there, and they have quite a variety! I will keep my eyes open next time I go there

Ja I stopped there once for this exact reason, but no autovilla caps to be found! The Potch road is dangerous if you linger - as in breakdowns -otherwise it is fine.
Check out the top speed on that autovilla! 111KPH! I only go to about 90kph. Mine is a 74 thus one of the early ones without the Luton exstension.

Aero dynamics of a shoe box.............and the weight no doubt has a lot to do with the fuel figures.
