Hi guys and gals
Finally got hold of a bug after working on my son's car for about a year. On that one I did a 1400 nissan conversion. This time round.I am fitting a golf 1800. I took the engine out of my bus project (planning to fit a Toyota 2T with a trd cam into that one). Fitting it into the beetle was a breeze ( if you consider taking it out five times in as many days a breeze). Had a bit of trouble with the clutch set-up. Problem now is that the spigot shaft seal is leaking causing a lot of oil on the clutchplate, resulting in clutch slipping. Will post pics later.

Somebody did a mod on the gearbox. They pressed a sleeve in where the seal is fitted to take a smaller seal. I tried to remove it so that I can fit a standard seal, but no sucsess. Ended up buggering it up (sorry Bugger,no pun intended) so much that I had to replace the gearbox. Got the motor back in but now the carburettor base cracked, so it sucks air. All in a day's work I suppose!

Replaced the carb base. Started it up but still same story. Thought maybe the fuel return line is blocked, resulting in over- fueling. Blew it open with the compressor. Fired it up still running erratically. (Scratch head, mind working overtime) Gave it a few good revs( rev hom soos n rental) backfires with a loud bang, dead. Started up again. Voila! Running perfect. Must have been a piece of dirt. In one of the jets. Today I need to sort out a heat gauge and oil light and make a plan with the decklid .

Tommorow it is back to work. As I am working on projects,I may have a few days available before starting on the next one. Still needs to sort out the heat gauge and oil light. By putting the deck lid in it's original position I don't have space for the OG Golf air cleaner. Will have to fabricate some sort of ducting to fit the carb that allows enough air into the engine. Any suggestions on how I can do this?

Will be sourcing a proper adaptorplate. The engine sagged because of the weight and cooked the gearbox seal again. Will have to wait for funds though!

Thinking of Gilo engineering but made dowels for my home made adaptor. Working fine now. Just need to make a crossmember.

Ricky,on your flywheel how did you modify it? Or are you running a standard golf flywheel?

Nope. Used a beetle flywheel which I had the centre machined out and fitted the centre of a golf pressure plate. Was done by a reputable engineering shop in polokwane. They even balanced it.

I have the gilo adapter on my speedster, very nice set up. Make sure that you take pics of the cross member as I'd love to see that, keep it up.

Hi there. Just a quick update. After sorting out the oil leak on the gearbox spigot shaft seal( a bit of mis-alignment on my adaptorplate, causing it to chow up the seal) I have done 5000 odd k's with the car. Runs like magic. Even gave a few Golf and honda drivers a quick hiding

. Believe me, they don't like it. One laaitie with a Datsun SSS had the excuse that his carbs were out of balance, but I could hear his car screaming behind me! (Reminder to myself: you need to do a brake upgrade). Now to sort out a few metal cancer issues. Will post pics as I go along.
