Hmm, so this is very very early days,
I told you guys that 2012 might hold what I have been looking for.

I found a Thing and the owner will let it go. I have not seen any photos, I have not gone to see it
nor has the owner made a price but I am so ecstatic about this great news I just have to let the
cat out of the bag.

I'm told its been standing in a shed on the farm for over 10 years, and it needs restoration BUT
its been out of the wind and rain so... (Hold Thumbs Guys)

I have made myself a price limit, and I decided regardless of whether there is licencing issues or not,
I will make that price to get this, however it looks.

As soon as I receive the photos I will share, and that is a promise.

Anyone with Literature on the Type 182 please share as much as possible from this point onward.

I am doing my utmost best to get a hold of the owner of this thing through other channels. The guy who pointed me in the direction of it has gone quiet and however much I want this Thing its not my style to harass somebody for something.


I am praying about this issue. That I will hear from him soon as he seems to be my only link, but if I have no news this week I'm gonna pitch up at his business and BEAT the owners telephone number outta him.

Just as a matter of interest, does anybody else know of Things available at the moment? (Project cars) and then another option is something more to the effect of a tub in the shape of a thing? I have heard there is an option out there.

What is it that gives a Type181 its awesome skill. I gather the pan is slightly wider than that of a type1. What makes it so competitive on inclines and difficult terrain? Reduction Box? What would it take to build a buggy that is as useful in the wild?

I am of the opinion that an SWB buggy would even be more effective off-road than a 181, simply because of the lower weight, and shorter wheelbase. As far as I know not all 181s had reduction boxes, but they do have a higher ground clearance than a standard Beetle chassis. The advantage of a 181 is that it is a full 4 or 5 seater, with 4 doors, and it it is quite a collectors item because of its rarity.

You can always ask Danie to build you a Kubel replica at a fraction of the price of a full 181 restoration?

A 181 handles better than a swb buggy.(in my opionion, having driven both) A buggy has very little direction control on the front wheels in the soft sand. In a buggy you got to learn to turn the steering wheel before you want to turn car, the kubel is more direct. I recon its the weight over the front wheels.

Where a buggy will cream a Kubel is running vertically up a dune or in the crest of a dune.

Best thing about a 181 over a buggy is the space, its totally water proof and you have something with a reconized value after a restoration.

181s are a basically a mixture of Type1,2 and 3 parts but all reinforced making them unique 181 parts.

OK, I tracked down the oke who emailed me and told me about this thing, he promised me he will make a point of getting me the price and photos tomorrow. He apologised about the delays apparently his line of work is also hectic at the moment. Will keep everyone updated.
