1964 Panel Van - Long term resto
Hi folks. Just got back from our road trip to go and fetch the splittie in Groblersdal. It's been quite a trip and while it was fun, 3600km's in 4 days is no joke and I am very glad to be back in Cape Town.
We left last week Thursday with a trailer which we rented in Cape Town because no-one in Joburg could help us with a one-way deal. We headed up to Joburg via Kimberley and encountered some of the worst roadworks I have ever been through. We got to Joburg that evening after 16 hours on the road.
Early Friday morning we bulleted through to Groblersdal where we met up with the seller and loaded the van up. We stopped at the Loskop Dam to take a picture and it was at this point that I sommer decided to pop down to Natal to visit my folks. We took the route via Ermelo and some of the worst roadworks I have ever been through (deja vue?). The very friendly policeman gave me a ticket for R750.00 for driving a tad too fast in his town and I bit the inside of my cheeks so hard trying not to swear at him that I still have blood blisters in my mouth. We arrived safely in Amanzimtoti late on Friday night.
Saturday we stayed in Toti for the day and then left again Sunday morning. We drove as far as Beaufort West where we stayed at the Oasis Hotel. The barman, bless his soul, opened the pub for us 'op die heilige Sondag' and after a doppie or two (or was it three ). I asked for a single but he told me that he had unfortunately sold out the last single to the previous chap who was there, so I had to make do with doubles. Well oiled we went and had a lekker rib dinner at the Spur on the circle exiting town.
This morning we woke up to find that the whole of Beaufort West was snowed under. That was a really cool suprise in more ways than one. We got on the road early and drove through a snow blizzard to Lainsburg where we had a nice healthy Wimpy breakfast and the best coffee in the world. We encountered a particularly nasty accident with a bus and two trucks and I believe that the N1 was later closed due to the severe snowstorm which hit town just after we left.
We dropped the van off at the warehouse where she will now stay till I am ready to start the stripping. There is quite a lot of rust on this one and we are going to need a lot of panels and parts but despite that it is still a fairly straight vehicle. Looking forward to getting this one done but it's going to take a looooooong time.

There's a helluva lot to do so I am going to start with building myself a decent workshop. Aaaah yes ..... a nice workshop! That sounds like a fine project.

Tnx Paul. Give me a call if you are in the area and we can go look together. Unfortunately the bus isn't driving and won't be for some time.jolas wrote:Hey Richard

Epic is certainly the right word. Congrats.
A snow covered bus pic in SA, THAT's one you don't see every day.

I think the next trip should be the KKK 6th Annual Kamp at Fig's place in your ACVW Bus and not in a BMW X5.Stütz wrote:Ah, Figaro .... sorry we never made it past you on the weekend. Re: 1967 Panel Van
...but you see now, that's where the saying "nice from far, but far from nice" comes from. The entire inside deck needs replacing from front footwell right through to the back. The roof is also rusted all along the left side at the gutter. All the windows are fooked and the rear hatch needs replacing. Other than that (and a jillion other things) it's not too bad.sean wrote:Thats a nice bus! Only bad rust seems to be the sills. The rest looks not too bad.
Hmmmm .... I'll have to think about that.sean wrote:I think the next trip should be the KKK 6th Annual Kamp at Fig's place in your ACVW Bus and not in a BMW X5.

OK! See you there!
One 'but' though is that it will have to be in either the SC or DC because the split will never be ready by then.

It's time we had another Kaapse konvoy to the KKKult kamp-out. The last couple of years the Cape flag has been flown by individuals like Sean and Tonya and Ilke, who drove alone in a Fleetline from PE with a new baby on board.
Jolas is already first in the konvoy queue!
