Ive been having the same idea in my head for a long time and the orange one is my insperation
I would fit two identical roll bars --one inside the cab—to shape the body around and to support the roof.This will be extend to the front under the door sills. The other r/b will be outside the canopy witht extension to the torque tube and another brace to the shock tower –this will be underneath the loading platform.
The two roll bars will be bolted together with shiny bolts with rubber grommets where it goes through the body. The insde one can be covered up if you don’t like the look of it.
Load platform- I will use a Nissan 1400 floor and sides (inside)cut to size.
Engine- t3/4 flat engine with engine cover open at the top.
Air intake on the sides between cab and rear fender.

Or you can find the owner of the orange bakkie and buy it -- Much easier – That bakkie is realy cool and well build

Excellent advice so far.

You could also support the pan at the outer sides in the middle. (Below the rearmost parts of the doors.)

From the middle of the tunnel, (behind the seats), make a strong transverse support, running outwards towards the outer edges of the pan halves. (Below the rear of the doors). Similar to what VW did in the front, below the "bulkhead" just in front of the pedals. Also strengthen the outer edges of the pan halves, or strengthen the heater channels from back to front.

As others said, you will need a flat type 3 or 4 engine to be practical.

I saw this post on Volkzone - the guy took a profile and had them rolled out at work. Being in IT, no one around here is going to roll something like that out for me (except in photoshop I suppose!)

Ok, now that I read your post properly - the rear section is from an old Austin Truck - not sure whether one would be able to find something like that around here...

I saw this post on Volkzone - the guy took a profile and had them rolled out at work. Being in IT, no one around here is going to roll something like that out for me (except in photoshop I suppose!)

That is a nice cut and weld. You can check the work in progress on the right hand side!! I guess one could use any bakkie with a lekker profile or an old 2 ton truck!

To weld the body to the pan is not the answer. The roof of the Beetle is what gives it structural strenght. If you cut the roof you have to strenghen the pan to compensate. Search for pictures of the Beetle Cabriolet (factory cabriolets) pan/chassis. Your answer lies there. If you look closely, you will see an extra support bar on the bottom of the pan (front to back).
