Aircooled VW South Africa

Ok so this is not quite historical - but it does'nt fit into the "spotted" section iether.
Now don't shoot me (I'm the humble messenger) or Phil, this happened sometime in 1984 in Zimbabwe (where Phil lived and ran a garage).
There were still plenty of what are now "classic" car bodies lying around. Excuse the photos .......
Anyway this took Phil 11 months to complete, the notch was the donor car, apparently the "Porsche" is still in Zimbabwe.

Not the bad attempt... Just the wheelarches and bonnet are overdoing it a bit. He should have aimed for a 911T

i might be the odd man out here but for that kind of skill, time and money the project would have looked a whole lot better if he restored the notch. just selling some porsche bits and pieces he could have had a cash advantage. sad to see a genuine classic go to waste to produce an imitation of another kind.

They weren't classics in 1984, they were yesterday's news....

I suppose you have to know the man and his circumstances at the time - he was a garage owner, probably happened to have a few car bodies lying around, a few ideas, a bee in his bonnet, an angle grinder.
You should hear what they did with kombis there at the time - they were used as road scrapers, tippers/dumpers, mine detection vehicles, etc, etc. Apparently they were bought in job lots at autions in SA (Post Office, municipalities, etc, etc), had their bodies "removed", and the chassis/motors sent to Zim. I would love to see pics of those, unfortunately he has non. I have asked him to draw some sketches ........Does anyone else on the forum have knowledge/info on these vehicles?

He is extremely creative, this ain't the only vehicle he has "built". He is in his seventies and still at it. I think that the notch body was to him then what a Mazda or similar car would be to us now.
