Lots of metal work and not much to gain also length is different. Top gear in a T@% 5 speed is not an overdrive and is similar to T2 top ratio.
The extra gear you get is effectively the first gear which is lower.

Sorry to bug you but I'm at 0s on the subject, http://www.rjes.com/html/gearbox_types.html with all these differences isn't it better to have one of these 5spd with lower rpm (hopefully faster too)?

What you have to look for is the FINAL drive ratio to one. As well as the top gear ratio.
If both have the same top gear ratio and you have a 8 speed box with the same final drive ration of say 4.5 :1 and you have a 2 speed box with a ration
of 4.1 : 1 then the 2 speed will give you a better fuel economy, and higher top speed then the 8 speed box.
If you ask Bugger, he has a calculation that he does, which will give exactly the RPM drop in top gear for the same speed.
Hope this helps......

HI Yes the conversion is plausable / Doable

But first you need to give me the Code on your current box and the code on the 5speed box you are planning on fitting then I can check what Diff ratios and 4th /5th ratios each box has and then work out if the ratios are longer

Other wise we just bring longer 4th gear ratio for your bay box in from the States

My gears weren't so lekker and when shifting down 2nd used to hide away and disappear :)
I have subsequently found out what the problem was and have solved it. It's now working 5*.
I have the 002 box, the u plate had broken by one of the bolts and while it was open I replaced the hockeystick bushing. I know f koll about gear ratios but was considering the hypthesis of a lower rpm (noise reduction) and faster Kombi.
