Have been running with a needle bearing "pushed into flywheel and locktited" for more than 2 decades. Was a reasonably tight fit. Flywheel/clutch is 210mm from a 1700 kombi. Crank is Okrasa "wbx hybrid" type that i used in a type 1 aircooled engine. (Wbx uses type 4's 5-bolt flywheel attachment and no 1 main bearing, combined with otherwise beetle dimensions). So far no issues.
At the time (pre internet), i was'nt aware that the longer spigot shaft from a type 4 engined combi box would fit. If the opportunity comes along i might change the spigot shaft.
Could be wrong, but i recall measuring that the widening part of spigot shaft near the splines could prevent needle bearing from sliding out all the way. But do'nt quote me on that, this was many moons ago.

Also had a type 4 engine in a beetle around late seventies. No knowledge of the needle bearing issue at the time. It did sometimes leak a bit of transmission oil, and i replaced transmission oil seal. Somehow oil did'nt end up on friction disc, just dripped a bit from joint where engine/transmission meets. But i was probably just lucky there.


Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Thanks for the info Dawie,

So the Motor is in, the brakes were bleed, the gearbox filled with oil, the motor also filled with oil.

Had an issue setting the clutch cable as i wanted it, and also need to get used to the point that the new gear box wants the engine running when changing gears.

Went around the block a few times, and found that I need to set the brakes up a bit more now that they have settled down.

The hand brake also need attention but will get sorted at the same time as the foot brake.

Man was it good to drive the Fastback again after more then a year.

I was very impressed that she started on the 2nd turn of the key, after letting the electric fuel pump fill the floats.

Will do the above and give it a bit of a wash, before taking it out for a shakedown run for a few hundred kilo's

So I decided that its time to work out what the new long 4th gearbox does as far as engine rev's

The best way is to fit a Rev counter, but that will be a bit takkie, even I have my ethics.

Right so it will have to be a hideaway unit, .....

As said by Tony, maybe fit it temp. and mark the speedo, then you will have it.

OK, so now my take on it is, fit the rev counter get use to the gear changes and top speed revs then move it to the next car.

So here is a photo of the Rev counter fitted as seen from the drivers seat........

Well now I can use it when I need to, and hide it when not used. Yes it is fixed to the glove box lid, and slides neatly into the glove box when closed.

Decided to wash the Fastback as I had her out to stretch her legs,

did you drive it or just take it out for a wash and park it again?

Ha Ha, these are the working class cars here Sir.....

No we took her for a highway drive and made some notes on her speed/ engine rev ratio.

Makes for interesting reading, as it near perfect from one gear to the next.

1st Gear 4000rpm = 20 Mph
2nd Gear 4000rpm = 40 Mph
3rd gear 4000rpm = 60 Mph
4th Gear 4000rpm = 80 Mph

80 Mph = 128 Kph

So what is the recommended cruising rpm for a type 4 2lt motor ???????

She will be tasked with an very important job soon, and thats to bring home the Split Bus as well as the 1952 Split Beetle from Paint.

So she has to stay nimble.

You right Terry, but there are a few that come up now and then, but all will need work.

Finding that perfect gem is not possible now days as they all suffer from rust from one point or other.

And always without motors.....

I called that getleman in Pretoria and its got no papers he is trying to get them from the PO.He has to pay the licence from 2012 but he is struggeling to get the money to pay the back dated licence then he can get the papers and he will have it resprayed and he wont sell it for under ar100000. Good golly what a way to try and sell a car,just hope he does not do this for a living.

The fastback is still running fine, just did the Jefferys Bay C.C.C meeting with her

Think I will be taking her on a short road trip soon, just down the coast.

So the Home town showing gave me a need to take the Fastback out for a short run.

So I decided to run up the coast to a small "Town" called Bathurst, it is about 12 kilometres inland from Port Alfred, on the R67 road.

Started off in Jefferys Bay, and went via Port Elizabeth,and Alexandria (Alexandria is a small farming town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and is situated 100 km North East of Port Elizabeth on the way to Bushman's River Mouth) and Port Alfred.

Nice run of approx. 240 Km and she ran like clock work.

So you probably wondering why Retrovan is updating the fastback thread.

Its been standing so long it nearly qualify s as a barn find.... :shock:

As it was one of Johans most liked I decided to get it out and use it for his farewell.

So the next day I gave it a once over as it will be going to George with the white Bay.

Low and behold the alternator will not charge.

Tested another voltage regulator and landed up with the shock that its the alternator.

So out it came and off for repair. now its just refitting and getting her ready for George.

Will be "A" framing her down, as everybody wants to be in the bus for the trip,

and I do need to take two cars as if one brakes down the other can take on the tow.

Made the "A" frame to fit on all my aircooled's.

So see you all at George.

Just to say that the alternator and voltage reg. are in full conversation with each other and the battery is nicely fed.

So all looks good for a nice easy convoy down to George.

She looks very sad, just sitting in the workshop, you can see she wants to head for the hills and stretch her legs(oops, her wheels )

Will have to take her for a "shopping spree" far , far away.....
