TDI GEARS FOR SYNCRO

I am looking for information on how to get "tall" top gear for my 4 speed syncro to bring the RPM down to about 2800 to 3000 @ 120 km/h
I am planning to fit a new 1.9TDI or 2.0TDI engine but long distance cruising speed will be very slow on the normal 4th gear and the TDI does dot like the high RPM'S
I found a lot of posts about the "tall" 3rd and 4th gears but no info on where to get hold of these gears.

Speak to Stuart from Syncro Hospital. I think his username is Syncromad. As far as I know Bugger only does Beetle gearboxes.
You can also try Erlemans in JHB.

Remember that during long term usage, it is torque that kills gearboxes, not horsepower.
You will have to decide if you can afford the inconvenience and cost of a stripped syncro gearbox in the middle of nowhere. Speak to experts like Bugger.
Having a gearbox last over 100 000's of kilos in a heavy kombi during offroad conditions is a different ballgame compared to a few runs of the quartermile.
For a comparison: the older 1.4 tdi polo 3-cylinder diesel already has about 195 Nm torque. 4-Cyl 1.9 have more.
The original old Ford V6 had about 234 Nm, and it is common knowledge that gearbox life with these were measured in months, not years.
One option may be to keep the 2.1 engine and just change 3rd and 4th gears to taller ones. (To compensate for the low gearing of the Synchro's differentials). Assume you already have 16 inch wheels and large diameter tyres.
If you do decide to go tdi, maybe change both differentials to standard 2wd kombi type. ( 4.86:1 or 4.57:1).

Dawie those "LONGER" std 2.6 five cylinder diff ratios for Syncro are Super expensive Back is not to bad but the front diff was 2 years agou around USD$3200

Hi Syncro 4x4
i run a 1.9 td Golf 4 motor in my syncro, with stock ratio's, i have 15" 245/75 tyres and it will cruise on a flat road at 110km/h.
First off we need to know what diff ratio you have, syncro's came with 5x versions. gearbox code will give this.
The 1.9td motor is not easy to install with all the electronics, we changed to a mechanical pump. Bullet proof and strong.
You can Pmail me for any other info. or
As was mentioned, the TD will eat gearboxes, i go throught at least 2 a year but i do abuse my syncro.
