Quite an interesting car, never seen one in the flesh.

Never seen one of those before, kind of looks "related" to the Type 3, not as pretty

I like it ! Wonder what the "filler" flaps for on the 1st pic ?

There is one in Gauteng
It has been at the Piston Ring meeting on the back of a trailer, looking like the one in the first pic.

Most probably fuel.

Without the front bumper it don't look too bad

Had the oppertunity to buy one once --excelent condition but to expensive @R600.00---
My bike cost only R3000.00 at the time.

There is a red one inside the Model Airplane shop next to Mega Mica at Cedar Square Fourways. Has an air cooled 500cc engine very similar to the BMW R50 motorbike. That racing one in one of the previous pictures - or one just like it - is owned by a German guy who often goes on runs with the 356 Porsche club - I have seen it several times.

I like the race spec one - hey but thats just my thing ! (its a cool colour for a race car - makes it look like a bit of a sleeper!)

The 700RS also looks pretty cool - just hope both the RS and the car were light weights cause the power output is relatively low - but its rear engined so should be good fun

This spent some time in my shop some time ago.

The owner bought a basketcase rolling chassis with the intention of building a race car for the classic races at Zwartkops.

This is the result:


The wheels on the car are the original ATS wheels that were available as an option in 1961. He saw them on a car trailer whilst driving on the R28, pulled the guy over and bought the wheels on the spot.



This car is so clean that you could litarally eat off it. The craftsmanship has to be seen to be believed.



The engine is basically a BMW R65 boxer engine. All the correct high performance parts were ordered ex Germany to exactly replicate the racing engine in the Hans Stuck race car (see Eben's first pict)

The scale model was the incentive that got the ball rolling.



This is what the interior looks like. To find the correct era push button radio, he and his wife trolled every pawn shop down Natal's South Coast from Durban to the Wild Coast.





As an aside, he bought the Jeep in the picture as a basketcase, because he was suffering offroad withdrawal, after selling his new Jeep Renegade. Four months after buying it as a pile of junk, he won "Best Engineered Vehicle" at the Rust de Winter 4x4 Jamboree.

The BMW 700 engine has a crank-mounted cooling fan, like a type 4 engine.

The Colani version of that car was designed for low cd. (Coefficient of drag was claimed at only .22)
Apparently this enabled a top speed of 200 kmh with the 2 cylinder engine.

Once saw an industrial version of the bmw motorcycle aircooled twin boxer, also with crank-mounted fan.
It was connected to a pump from a fire engine. Made by Rosenbauer.
