Type 3 engine in a buggy

Post by Pine »

Let me start by saying that I do NOT plan on doing this myself, but the idea of putting a pretty standard Type 3 engine in a buggy have fascinated me for a long time. In the 60's, when Type 3's were starting to become more available, certain buggies were even specifically designed for Type 3 engines, like this Manx Beach Patrol buggy, which had extra luggage space above the ('flatter') engine:

There is a lot of debate about how effective the cooling is in an 'open' buggy, since you don't have the 'channeling' of air, as in a Notch, Square or Fastback. Yet there are thousands of buggies running for thousands of kilometers with 'standard' Type 3 engines.

This buggy, one of two used in the James Bond movie 'For Your Eyes Only', also had a Type 3 engine -

But what made me wrote this post, is the pic below that I saw on TheSamba today - what an ingenious way of routing an exhaust! Imagine the size of the TURBO one can fit above that engine

Very cool routing. Looks like the start of the beach buggy "TRANSFORMER"
