It all depends of the year model Beetle, but it is relative simple. Normally, you will have a fused permanent positive, a permanent earth, and an earth switched on and off by the switches in the doors. To activate the light when the door is open, the switch on the light itself will have a closed circuit for the permanent positive, and it will go on. To switch the light on with the door closed, you need to complete the circuit between the permanent positive and permanent earthm but I am not sure if early Beetles had that feature?

Yup. The above site has that. You must just go through it. There are diagrams for the majority of ACs.

You can see it under MY RIDE. It is the 12th item on the third page. It has a 1600 engine.
