1978....I remember we were snowed in for 2 weeks in Somerset and helicopters had to drop food from Yeovil for the small villages like the one we lived in. We have snow drift 8 foot deep

That must have been New Year's Eve 1978 and early 1979!

On New Year's Eve 1978, I was returning to the UK, from Mombasa, via Nairobi, on an Aer Lingus, Boeing 747, crewed jointly by Air Lingus flight crew & Kenyan Airways cabin crew. Within ½-hour's flight time from Heathrow airport, were were diverted to Dublin, as all UK civil airports were closing owing to the snow blizzard. Within about ½-hour of landing, Dublin aitport also closed, followed by Shannon a short time later.

The following morning, we were able to fly back to London. As we crosed the Welsh coast, we saw an almost continuous blanket of white snow, interupted by just the trees of the forests. Returning home by train & bus from central London, also provided some challenges!

It was quite a homecoming, making the transition from nearly 40ºC in Mombasa, Kenya, to -12ºC in S.E. Essex, England!
