WHAT IS THIS?

Post by Hloni »

I saw this in central south afrika this week, took some pics and was wondering what this be. if it is anything good, i think i will go see if owner might be willing to get rid of it. like i said, central south afrika, thing is so dry that vader will be seen nowhere near it.

as you will see, it's a rear mount engine. my first thought is citroen looking at the chevrons, however the french use 2 chevrons while this pink baby has 3 of them.

the wheels are 16"

Gutbrod was a German car that was assembled near Pretoria in the '50's. I think that it was also aircooled.

I like :hangloose:

EDIT: NOT FRENCH!! GERMAN!

Thanks fig.

That is a Gutbrod Atlas. Gutbrod was a German company.

IIRC, some early Gutbrod vans/pick-ups had VW engines driving the front wheels.

They are very rare and seem to be quite desirable among overseas collectors.

With a top speed of 70km/h  even sambabus's Fleetline will be able to keep up. :P

I just noticed this one is RHD! That makes it even rarer and more desirable.

I've only ever seen one other in SA.

Re my comments above, it wasn't the Gutbrod that had the ACVW engine, but the early Tempo Matador (a similar commercial vehicle). I've never seen a Gutbrod; it was a Matador I'd previously seen.

According to that brochure it had a two-cylinder 576cc engine.

Probably not as good as a split bus for road trips.

PS and HP are pretty close, so this two stroke had a whopping 16HP!!

Who was complaining about a 36HP 1200 ACVW engine ?? :D

Looks pretty cool :hangloose:

Go on Hloni, buy it, fix it, EXPORT IT

x2 well sorta, Id do all that but instead I would not export but keep it, that might just be one of the rarest German cars in SA(correct me if Im wrong, not sure, but Ive never seen one, and dont know too much about old cars in SA)
Ive heard of more Samba's in SA than those vehicles.
It might not be an ACVW but its damn old and German ,
And somewhere in SA the Gutbrod club members of SA are having an argument on their forum about people exporting these just to make money,,,

KEEP IT !!!!!!!!!...my opinion
