Biggest question. What's your budget? Do you want to go watercooled or keep it aircooled? There are quite a few engine options that you could try.

Do some reading thru the advice section.
Letting us know your budget is the first step in the right direction.

20K wont get you anywhere...
Have you upgraded your brakes to discs yet? If not, then please dont modify your engine. After doing the brakes, you might be able to put in a golf engine or build a small mild 1600.

For R20k I'd build myself a nice, mild type 4 engine with EFI. It can be done for that kind of money if you are willing to shop around and do a lot of the work yourself. The next engine that i'm planning for my fastback is a 2056cc with EFI. And it's costing me way less than R20k
Ask around, speak to many people as you can. You'll quickly see that a lot of people have different opinions when it comes to this topic...

Hy where has my post gone
You will not build a reliable 2L type 4 turbo for 20K sorry
Do the math
EFI R5K
Fuel pump and piping R2K
Buy motor 2nd hand R2-4K
Recon R8K
New turbo R4K
Intake system and exhaust R3K
Upright cooling R2.5K
Alternator R?
My 2.4 turbo motor is up for sale for R25K which I am contemplating on rather keeping for the wifs Squareback
But reliability do not try and fool your self
Rotary std 100Kw on the wheels @ 0.5Bar boost
Against a 2L type 4 also making around 100Kw at .8Bar boost on the highway at 5000RPM to Pta from Jhb whos the winner
Reliability wise and money spent

103 mm pistons
Barrels have got piano wire on for better sealing
big valve heads CU type exhaust square ports Ported to the valves
Twinspark mod on heads
Double high ref valve springs
Lightend conrods shotpeened
Crank knife edge
all moving parts balanced
Tcs 30 Turbo billet spec cam with high lift and big base sircle for reliabile valve train
CR around 8:1
Turbo exhaust headder
T4 turbo
Upright fan housing
There are thing or 2 I have forgotten built it in 2002
This motor has seen 275 HP on the wheels before and powerd my buggy to a best of 11.1 sec 1/4
