Gearbox for champ motor in beetle
Hi there
I need some help, i am currently running a Nissan A15 motor in my beetle, i just want to know if there isnt any gearbox i can run that will work better with the motor, as the perfomance im getting from the motor with my standard box is pathetic?

Hi
Your budget for a complete motor change is a slight low
But what I can suggest is for around 10K or less you can turbo that Nissan 1500 import motor
And still run it reliable with nice extra power
What area are you from
Do you know of the local http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za forum
Cheers
Pierre

Re: Gearbox for champ motor in beetle
What a strange request! Never heard this before.
I have an 1500 langley motor in my buggy on a 1600 beetle gearbox. There is no difference to write home about regarding the performance.
In my honest opinion both motors give you the same drive. Although I would like a 5th gear as the rev's are slightly higher now (+/-200rpm higher). But then again I actually prefer this as its easy to tow my fully laden trailor around the country with no hassles.
The only way to go is turbo.

Re: Gearbox for champ motor in beetle
sorry for being so blunt..... but the reason your setup is sluggish is because you have a crap engine.
50hp in one engine is the same as 50hp in another. The gearbox doesnt change that.
As for ratio's, the stock beetle box has some of the lowest ratios on the road.
If you made some power available, you wouldnt be complaining about the gearbox. Like bugger said, put a turbo on that thing

Hey Bugger....
what would be the options regarding the gearbox, if say a twincam or 1.4 citi engine was put into a bug? i take it that the golf gearbox wont fit in a bug, so how does one make it work?

Re: Gearbox for champ motor in beetle
Guys seriously, The gearbox in a Lotus Elise has the same 6th gear ratio as a Beetle's 4th gear. I'm sitting at the exact same rpm at 120 in both cars! If you ask me, Both need a longer top gear if anything. And i have the strange feeling that 1st gear in both is almost the same as well. There is nothing wrong with a beetle box (besides it needing a longer 4th).
But ya, Bugspray, I would say get a longer 4th and if funds allow then a longer 3rd as well.

From fastest to slowest:
Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods
B8 A4 Avant tdi, towing made easy

Re: Gearbox for champ motor in beetle
Excellente! so basically engine swap with the std box, but just longer ratios. ok. thats good to know.. thanks. just a curiosity q. im thinking aircooled carbs are evil now. maybe watercooled injections are better.
