Another Helicopter

Post by Pine »

Saw this bird between Ermelo and Piet Retief today. I think it is a Bell 204 or 205, almost like those that were extensively used in the Vietnam war? They have that deep WOOOOP WOOOOP WOOOOP sound of the large blades when in flight.

This one is used for fire patrol in the forests of Mpumalanga.

OK, I was a bit confused so I found this on Wikipedia:
The UH-1 Iroquois is a multipurpose military helicopter, famous for its use in the Vietnam War. It is commonly known as (or officially in the U.S. Marine Corps) the "Huey".

The UH-1 was developed by Bell Helicopter from 1955 US Army trials with the Bell Model 204. The initial designation of HU-1 (helicopter utility) led to its nickname, Huey.

Id prefer calling it a good memory when I was very young !!

They have a hanger with heuy's on the left side as you enter Cape-Town on the N1, for sightseeing trips
Suppose growing up on an airforce base makes you interested in planes without even realising it

The Huey was the first helicopter used for claose air support for GIs,it started out having 2 7.62 cal machine guns mounted in the doors, then a field mod saw it get a arms with rocket launches that fired phosphorus rockets to mark enemy targets for bombing by the airforce.

The huey was so good at this role they equiped it with propper rockets, and flares to mislead heat seeking misiles.
