A Rhino is being Born

Post by Bugger »

I am starting with the build of 2 Rhino Casing transmissions today and will be taking some pictures of the casings,HD mainshafts Super diffs Chrome molly Side shafts and each Tranny are getting 2 HD side covers

So you guys can fire away some Questions and I can answer some of them

Certain things I will keep under wraps Coz I do not want to Reveal all my Secrets but I will try and show as much as I can

One is for a friend and the other was my own one that Was destined for the Flag buggy
But was sold in the meantime

The one might even get a Paint job

I have had some machining done to some of the gears and pinnion Shafts and there will be lots of other machining and stripping to be done

These Rhino Casings are using some of the very old style clips and bearings and Reverse Itlers
I have bought NOS Roller bearings for both of them as the Roller style bearings are much stronger than the Roller bering type for Performance
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
And Special Boxes built for Rotary Conversions and Scubies

Here's an even BIGGER Q:

If you cut off the nose cone of a Rhino case and smoke it, will it make your tottie go Brixton Tower?

The Price differs with the change of the Mainshaft ratios

A rhino trans like these are in the bracket of $3000 with all the bells and whistles
Just an Idea of some of the Spares Pricing
Main shaft $850
Side shafts $375
Rhino Casing $250
Pinnion Bearing for Casing $185
HD side covers $250
4 spider diff $250

Shipping for the above $300
SA Import duty 18-24%
SA VAT 14%

I like to order the main shafts with a longer 1st gear and a longer 2nd gear then a std 3de is used most of the times and 4th vary from aplication to aplication street track or Drag

This is where it all start the work bench in the side Garage :D
1442- (Small).JPG

Here is a Look at the casings and can be seen that there are a lot more ribbs added to the casing as from std
I will take a picture of a std casing and a Rhino for better comparrison for you guys next to one another tomorrow
1453- (Small).JPG
Even on the inside of the Bell housing you will find some extra ribs

Here are some shots of the Basic Kitt that is going in to Both of them
I have managed to get new old stock Roller Pinnion bearings for both of them
I am basically using three different Transmissions for spare parts to build these Rhino cases
The reverse Idlers are from new type trans but the Revers shaft Bearings is from a older type trans
Then the Pinnion shaft bearing also needs to be remofed from another case
I have bought for both these cases all new bearings where available

On the revers Idlers there has to be shimms machined aswell as the Reverse gear itself has to be machined Smaller for clearancing of the 2nd Taller ratio Main shaft that gets installed.and the shift fork needs some mods for shifting
1485- (Small).JPG
1469- (Small).JPG
Here is a picture of three casings to have a better comparison between the Rhino case and the std ones
1451- (Small).JPG
Both gear carrier housings will be rebushed aswell for the shift forks to work as to when new

I have also sourced Steel shift selecter forks for these transmissions as for the Copper shift forks can not take the Punishment of serious hard shifting between the gears

Yes the Bolt hole can me machined after wards if the tranny is assembled But I am waiting for the 4 HD side covers to be clearanced machined then Will check to do that before the assembly begins

This is just a pic to show the differance between the 2 types of Revers Idlers. The one with the groove is the one to be used due to the clearance issues with the cage type
1500- (Small).JPG
Here is a better comparison pic of a STD transmission casing and the Rhino CAsing
1504- (Small).JPG

Here is a better pic to give you guys that does not know where the Transmission code is at the bottom of the trans for referance of what ratios should be in side the box once being stripped

Doubt the man will divulge his secret methods. I've been there and seen what he does to these transmissions and I am proud to say my car is now sporting a Bugger Transmission :hangloose: When I'd gone back and seen how SPOTLESS my old "box" looked in bits and pieces, I nearly wanted it back!! My old one was in a hell of a state as some bright spark YEARS ago had put CV grease into the axle boots which in time had split and made a grand job of flicking the grease around. It was like cement all stuck in the groves and channels and had hardened over the years. It was glistening when I saw it after Pierre was done. Respect!
