sad VW racing news

Post by red-m »

I heard today that there's now one less Beetle on the race track -
at Welkom yesterday, there was a bad accident in Historics, with an Alpha having hit the light blue racing Beetle driven by Harry Lombard, right after Alan Poulter passed them in his Bobby Oltoff replica Cortina.
Both drivers seem OK, but are bruised and sore..........

Sad news indeed, but thanks for the update Heide. We've got a clip on the Beetle in better days on the AircooledVWSA channel below:

Hi Pine
nice clip!
Anyway, at least Harry is OK - and Alan Poulter says there's a possibility the car will be rebuilt.

Remember guys, there's Historic racing this Saturday at Zwartkops - there should be 2 other Beetles on the track!

Thanks to Andries Groenewald for this pic

I am, however not 100% sure if it is the same car that was in the accident?

This mail and pics from Harry was forwarded to me by Red-M today
Few pics.Last one through the windscreen shows how the seat is bent away
from the roll bar on the driver's side.

Had a look underneath last night and saw the springblades are bent, the
bellhousing' area of the gearbox has split across the width and the
gearbox nose-cone is broken. The disc has also split and the engine
'support' bar underneath the car is bent.
I think this is going to be a long rebuild.
Rgds,Harry

Ouch. I never saw this happen on the tack. That just shows you the importance of a good seat!

We were busy loading our bug when it happened.

We Broke the engine casing on the inside where the cam follower sits, debris went down into the oil pump and broke the shaft. In 1second flat no more oil pressure. It was probably my own fault, I downshifted according to the recall tach to 8200rpm. So the red bug is also out... coming back stronger than ever (evil grin) :)

They're from a Renault Megane. 15" 7j.

I'm not sure, depends on when I get all the parts. I think my best lap was a 2:05 at Phakisa. My bug ran 1:17 at Zwartkops with the turbo engine, not trying too hard. With the n/a engine I can do 1:18's constantly.
