faulty petrol gauge

hi guys.my petrol guage seems to be faulty,filled up the tank,the guage only showed half,then later in the day it showed full,now it has a mind of its own.Any suggestion as to what may be the cause

If you have a elec. sender, the coils in the sender unit have started comming apart and it's catching. You are looking at a new sender and they are pretty expensive.

Mine also does that...I don't trust it anymore... Thanks for the advice. Prob: Must lift bonnet on Beamish buggy to get to sender unit. Sod that. Buy little jerrycan...

pull it out , check it , and go visit Beetle shop,or Gerald in sea view see if they have a working second hand one !We must still meet BB

I just have it in my car for the looks,I also have a 20l jerry can with me at all times,my gadge lets me know,that at sum point,....i will run out of petrol,.....about 20 km after the point at wich the needle stops bobbing around!

calooker.you were spot on usaul.its catching,the coil is chased trough. yip Bab,we should arange a braai as chris,s place,wil check at beetle shop for sender unit.Mabe calooker will inlighten us on the price for a new sender

hey my petrol gauge does the same! its like an erratic bunny. from what i can see on mine it seems as though the metal contacts where all the wires under the bonet go into the dash are connected are rusted. so i took them off and scraped and cleaned the pieces a little and then it worked like new for awhile. The connecters to the bulbs that light up my dash were also rusted and a simple clean made the bulb work again aswell.

Sorted out my petrol gauge,got a replacement sender unit and a little control box that fits behind the dash,all for under 100 bucks(second hand corse)
