What does IMPI stand for and more specifically from which car does the 1700 IMPI originate?

IMPI is the nickname for Armand Botha's 'experiments'. :)

It doesn't originate from any car.

Armand takes Type 4 engines - mostly - and then goes Nuts with them until you get a fire-breathig monster under the hood.

IMPI is a ripoff of EMPI.

Ok, what is a T4 engine. Since it appears that this is modified into the IMPI? :?:

Type 4 is a VW model.

They are flat 4 cylinder engines which are usually converted to stand upright and then placed, albeit with mods, into bugs and bus'.

Google 'Type 4' for a pic...I have none handy. :)

Hi Fergus,
this is a type 4 turbo engine.
Image
As you can see the fan housing is in front of the engine and not on top like in a beetle (type 1)

Type 4 engines came out as 1700, 1800 and 2000
they were used in the later type 2 busses(Called Bay windows cos they have curved windscreens) as well as in the Porsche 914.

Main difference appart from capacity and cooling is the addition of an oil filter as standard, a quite bulletproof crank and crankcase and rigid(non concertina) pushrod tubes....

Vw Type 1 Beetle
Vw Type 2 Transporter/Microbus/Kombi
Vw Type 3 Vw Sedan Notchback/Fastback/Variant
Vw Type 4 Vw 411/412

The Vw Type 2 evolution

T1 Splitscreen Van
T2 Bay Window
T3 Wedge (example 2.1i,2.5i,2.6i) Also known as Vanagon or T25
T4 Previous range
T5 Current Kombi/Caravelle/Crew Bus

The Type 4 engines was used in the 411/412 and the T2/T3 Microbus in 1700, 1800 and 2000 versions. It was also used in the Porsche 914 (and 356 if I remeber correctly) . It uses a bigger more durable aliminum crankcase than the type1 but spares are generally more expensive and harder to find than type 1 spares. Hope this helps,Fergus

Sorry I am late to this party. My friend Tom (known as Tuna on Samba and ShopTalk) has a site with lots of type 4 engine info:

http://www.tunacan.net/t4/

That site encouraged me to convert to type 4. Right now Eddie Brown is building me a putt-putt 1.7 (out of a 411) converted to upright to put into my offroader class 11 bug.

It's has been a long road up to this point, several years in the making, but it will be worth it............I hope............
