My Razor Edge
Here is my 1964 Type 34 Razor Edge Ghia project. Current status is that she is road worthy and registered, and almost everything works. Almost… the 2001 Porsche 911 passenger seat moves up electrically, but not down, the indicators don’t auto-cancel, and the accelerator pedal does not give me full throttle opening. This last one is actually a good thing as I am still running in the 2.3 liter, Engle 130 cammed motor. I’ll fix that after 3000km.
The plan ahead is to refit the original 6 Volt radio and fix a few more dash items, like the missing chrome surround around the ventilation levers and tidy up the dash vent. I need to fit an oil pressure gauge and label the warning lights. I am considering fitting a nice (hidden) sound system but have not yet decided what could possibly sound better than the induction noise from the two 44mm IDF‘s sucking through the big valved heads.
In the engine compartment, the critics will see that the fuel lines and air breather hoses need to be replaced with braded hoses with anodized fittings (so do the brake lines) and that the cooling fan’s powder coating needs touching up.
The history of this project is such: I bought the car in November 2003, drove it around for a year, handed it over for restoration in November 2004, suffered with it until March 2006, when I retrieved it in a burnt out condition from the restorers, spent 6 months deciding whether to carry on with her, and, with renewed vigour, handed her over to Mechanicars in Salt River in November 2007. We worked together (me criticizing and paying, they listening and doing) and the car was completed end of November 2008. Mechanicars is definitely recommended by me. The motor is a Dave Rowley motor, the back of which he is glad to see, I’m sure, having built it, rebuilt it and finished it over a 4 year period without the car turning a wheel under its own power. Dave custom built the exhaust and engine hanger bar also.

Beware the purists, they will not like what you have done, but man that thing looks awsome, nice work, some details on the engine?

Re: My Razor Edge
Engine: 044 heads, can't remember the valve sizes, as large as Dave could get in there, anyway, Engle 130 cam, dual valve springs, 44mm IDF Webers, 83mm stroke, 94mm bore, Kennedy 2 stage clutch, Hugo fuel pump, 96 pass oil cooler, 009 Dizzie with electronic ignition, lightened flywheel, full flow oil pump, deep sump, that's about it...
I know the purists will want to shoot me for cutting out the engine cover, but that's OK guys, my Notch has still got one!! The one on the Ghia was F@#$-ed beyond salvage, and I needed the extra cooling from the Porsche-look alike shroud arrangement. The rest of the car is still original and untoughed by angle grinders, or rather, restored to original by cutting and welding.

Re: My Razor Edge
Ghia is locked away safely, garage door closed, so there's no... er... never mind. SORRY MAN, but I can't resist, Jeezz, you know me how many years now??? Mate, I'll send you a bunch more pics on your PM, I have it in my yahoo contacts, hang five. You're welcome to come around after 8 Jan, I'm home then and we'll take her for a spin. Slowly..., still running her in... Those marks down the sides, yes, they were supposed to resemble the cover of the AC DC album of the same name, but the air brush artist took a little too much artistic licence. I think they look OK. Not awesome, but OK.

Re: My Razor Edge
HR: I'm on 28-28, have been for 18 months now. Very lekker, much better than 13-2. Do you know Blitz' PM, then you can forward the pics I sent you. Uploading them on the forum takes ages from here. Otherwise you can upload them for me, then everybody can see.
The front discs are Golf 2 discs, soon to be changed to VR6 discs, so they fill the rims more and look much better.

Re: My Razor Edge
Did you make a custom hub to fit the discs on? What type of caliper brackets did you use? Any pics of the setup?Ron&Gill wrote:HR: I'm on 28-28, have been for 18 months now. Re: My Razor Edge
Apparently... the rear discs from a Golf 2 and onwards fits straight onto the front wheel bearings. I don't have any pics of the setup, sorry, I left my hard drive at home... HR knows anyway, he did it on his buggy. Maybe he can help you sooner than I can. I can only tell you more when I'm at home.

Re: My Razor Edge
Okay cool, then it's the same mod that I am doing on mine, using the VR6 rear disc. Just don't know how to fab a caliper bracket
